I admit it, I didn't start reading Spiderman comics until AFTER One More Day ended AND Brand New Day started other than some Ultimate Spiderman stuff. People always say that the days of Amazing Spiderman before Brand New Day somewhat rewinded the story back some are better. If that is so, then I definitely need to pop in that Amazing Spiderman Collection DVD-ROM I have because if those stories are better then this American Son arc, and a few other of the new arcs from recent day, then I REALLY need to check those the fuck out because I'm TOTALLY loving Amazing Spiderman right now and pretty much since this whole BND thing started, and these Spiderman stories are way more fun then my previous Spidey experiences I had with the Ultimate line years back, besides those weren't bad either.
The books only cost $2.99 but you get them at least twice a month, if not three times. I have never even thought about switching over to trades when it comes to ASM. It's like BANG BANG issue issue! Every cliffhanger better then the last. Every week I got ASM on my pull list on the very top even before my Batman picks and if the story arcs stay as exciting and twist-turning as American Son, then I see no reason to stop reading this book.
I'm even thinking about just pay the $50 at Marvel Comics dot com and getting it for a year, it's doesn't seem like it will slow down any time soon, if I find another extra $50 up my ass sometime somewhere, then I'm definitely going to subscribe to this title, and it will be the first time I bought a subscription since I was in 7th grade (Action Comics, lol), and it will be the first time I EVER subscribed to a Marvel title!
I'm not even much of a Marvel fan at all. I gave X-Men Forever a shot but I definitely don't see myself paying no eight dollars a month for something that'll be in the trade bargain box at one of my local shops in about six and a half months, not for much longer. I did Dark Avengers why it was hot and new but I'm not in any hurry to read the next arc or the mini-series they got with Dark X-Men or whatever. Although, I still buy Amazing Spiderman all the time and you never have to buy another title to know what's going on in this story.
ASM is easy to jump into and it's so much fun. I think the reason I got into it was because of the timing for one thing: BND happened right as I started getting into reading comic books again, and it is very accessible to new readers as well. If you are somebody just starting out in comic reading, Blackest Night or Final Crisis might not be the best place to start. Well I did, but that's a whole different story. At the same time though, I found reading Amazing Spiderman a thousand times easier to understand and I just went with it. I've been on for nearly 40 issues now and I'm about to fucking subscribe to this. $50 for 36 issues?! FUCKING AWESOME DEAL!
Part 4 of American Son might be the best chapter yet. I really had no FUCKING IDEA that the Menace's child was actually Norman's child, not Harry's seed. I didn't see that one coming!! I might not care the heck less about some one shot stories out there like I Kill Giants or Bang Tango, but when this Joe Kelly guy writes a script to ASM, he does a damn good job and I hope to read more arcs that were scripted by him ASAP!
The colors in ASM are always great too. The pencils can be sloppy once in a while, but so far it hasn't happened in this arc once. Even Gargan looked like somebody put a little care into drawing his character, not just whippin up a black coated Spiderman real fast like it would probably look like in a Dark Avenger book. The art in this title is always high about decent. I hope it stays that way.
So people tell me ASM wasn't selling that well before BND and its doing a lot better now. They tell me Ultimate Spiderman was actually selling better before Brand New Day happened. Then why the hell is everybody bitching about how things in ASM were better BEFORE BND, but now more people are actually buying the book? Is it all because of the three issue a month experiment (which is a great idea for a top notch character like Spidey)? I guess we'll never know for sure.
But anyway, there aren't too many other ways for me to tell you that you need to pick up American Son and keep reading ASM regularly because it is probably one of the best titles on the racks right now. It is definitely the best book they have at Marvel, in my opinion of course, because I'm not even buying into the X-Men/Avengers crossover but that's mostly because I can't afford both and I don't wanna drop this.
Even though my pull list usually consists of books published by DC, or one of their many imprints, I still manage to squeeze some Marvel in there two or three times a month, and it's the best Marvel I can find on the stands, whether it comes out every week or not.
