When I first saw a preview of this book in the back of all the Vertigo books a few months ago I was immediately interested. The story seemed fresh, the characters interesting, and I have always been a fan of fantasy stories set in the real world, like Fables. While the first issue was great the series has nose dived since then. Issue 2 was pretty boring and this one has convinced me to drop the book altogether. Two things really bugged me about his issue. First, how Numara disappeared was built up in the first two issues and I was expecting a big reveal about how it has remained hidden for 50 years. Instead the first few pages simply state, "and the world just forgot about Numara." The world just forgot? Seriously? It felt like even Wilson didn't know why this country disappeared. Second, the action of this issue felt very rushed. In a matter of 15 or so pages Blythe is tortured and interrogated, convinces the Numari she is not a bad guy, infiltrates the Artesian (sp?) prison, floods the prison (this was the worst part! Why wouldn't the Artesians seal that manhole!?!), leads an uprising, loads the suriviers on a plane, uses her powers to magically return everyone to the "real" world, and has a conversation with a flying snake. The easy with which all this happened was just too much for me to take. In the first 2 issues Blythe is just a stewardess afraid of heights and now all the sudden she is infiltrating enemy camps and leading rebellions. There wasn't any character arc here, more like a character 180. The one good thing about this book is the covers are amazing. Too bad great covers don't make a great book.
