Make Comics #8 – Building a Page

Show Notes

Josh Flanagan is back with Andy Schmidt to bring you a weekly dose of advice on breaking into and making comics!

The foundation of the comic book story is the page. How a reader experiences a sequential story is determined by the layout and the storytelling skills of the artist. What does any of that mean to a newcomer? What works best? What is the grid, and how can you become proficient at building effective comic pages? We can’t solve all that for you, obviously, but we’ll give you a start in the right direction.

Running Time: 00:16:07

Andy is the founder of the online comic book school Comics Experience, as well as a former editor at Marvel Comics and IDW Publishing. Josh Flanagan has been working on iFanboy.com, talking, reviewing, and thinking about comics for over a decade, as well as writing and creating some of his own.

If you’re interested in going further, you can check out Comics Experience, where creators can take advantage of their workshops and the community to get feedback from peers and fellow creators, as well as meet people, network and get better at making comics. Also be sure to check out the creator workshops offered!

  1. A lot of good stuff here!

Using the grid as a starting point makes a lot of sense earlier on – especially in building your confidence.

It was also cool to hear Andy mention the things he would look for in an artist’s portfolio (feet, hands, women, etc…).

Thanks for making this series available!

  2. I love that ‘oh look its snowing outside’ got no reaction or comment cos it made me chuckle.

Anyway really great session once again

  3. really interesting segment..i liked the part about using the grid and how it basically eliminates complex sequential design (where i think some tend to get tripped up with more complex layouts) and focus on the visual storytelling. There is a lot to that. Great podcast once again
