Make Comics #7 – Professionalism

Show Notes

Josh Flanagan is back with Andy Schmidt to bring you a weekly dose of advice on breaking into and making comics!

It sounds good to work in comics, right? You can stay at home, and talk about supervillains and eat cereal whenever you want it. Well, that’s not all there is to it. If you want to make a career in comics, you want to be a comic book professional, and that means acting with professionalism. Andy and Josh take some time to talk out exactly what that means in the comic book industry. It’s not necessarily the same thing as with other businesses, but it’s important to remember, and goes hand in hand with bringing your talent to the comic book industry.

Running Time: 00:13:06

Andy is the founder of the online comic book school Comics Experience, as well as a former editor at Marvel Comics and IDW Publishing. Josh Flanagan has been working on iFanboy.com, talking, reviewing, and thinking about comics for over a decade, as well as writing and creating some of his own.

If you’re interested in going further, you can check out Comics Experience, where creators can take advantage of their workshops and the community to get feedback from peers and fellow creators, as well as meet people, network and get better at making comics. Also be sure to check out the creator workshops offered!

  1. Great show. I should share this podcast w/ some co works. No matter were you are working, there should some sort of pofessionalism & while everything is fun its still a business. ThAnks again guys

  2. really good show once again. Hitting deadlines is the most important thing IN ANY profession. One of my first editors told me on my first day of work, “be honest with me about what you can get done in the time i’m asking and i’ll worry about everything else…just don’t promise me something you know you can’t deliver” —i’ve used that philosophy for years now and its never done me wrong.

Especially with creative stuff some of your collaborators just have no clue how long a “simple request” might take to execute. You gotta communicate with your teammates.

  3. Just wanted to mention that I really appreciate the attempts to be a bit more careful regarding gender-neutral language in these podcasts. I found the first few episodes a bit disheartening in the way they seemed to unconsciously imply that only men would be involved in this industry. People of all genders can use this kind of advice. 🙂
