Pick of the Week Podcast

Pick of the Week #236 – Thunderbolts #144

Show Notes

With Josh Flanagan out lobstering in Maine (and possibly harvesting sea urchins), the hardest working staff writer in comics, Paul Montgomery stepped up to join Conor Kilpatrick and Ron Richards for comic book fun time talk. And boy, did he pick a doozy of a week, with two big Avengers launches and one of the weirdest books that anyone has heard of in a long time.

Running Time: 01:00:00

Pick of the Week:
00:01:56 – Ron loves a good “getting the team together” comic, and the Pick of the Week, Thunderbolts #144, was just that.

Comics:
00:10:04 – Ron and Paul loved the heck out of Thanos Imperative: Ignition #1.
00:13:08 – Secret Avengers #1 was fun, but… there were a few “but”s.
00:15:49 – Justice League: Rise of Arsenal #3 was… just… bizarre…
00:21:26 – After The Amazing Spider-Man #632 we are all now believers in Bachalo.
00:24:26 – One of Ron and Conor’s favorite books makes a brief return in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #37.
00:25:22 – Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne #2 is smart and fun.
00:27:36 – Ron says to ignore the nay-sayers, X-Force #27 rocked.
00:28:51 – There was one great thing and one not so great thing in Fantastic Four #579.
00:30:26 – Dazzler #1 made Ron happy and he thinks he’s discovered a new favorite artist.
00:32:21 – Was Choker #3 the best issue since the first… but the delay hurt.
00:33:36 – Paul made a nice discovery in Mystery Society #1.

  1. What? Conor’s back and there’s still no talk of Justice League: Generation Lost? Ah well, still looking forward to the show as always, guys.

  2. Flash on the Video Show? Nice.

  3. AWESOME MUSIC CHOICE.

I will fight anyone who disagrees.

  4. What about the Watchmen?  That’s a DC book with impotence.  Maybe the whole thing was just a nod to Alan Moore

  5. @DrColossus: WATCHMEN was a mature readers book.

  6. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

And before this goes any further, I don’t think any of us are up in arms or anything. It’s just a bit of a surprise to see "angry violent almost-sex" and "kidsumption" in mainstream books.

  7. that song is craze

    also gonna check out thanos

  8. One hour flat? You guys are robots.

  9. I think it’s notable that no royalties are being paid to creators from any Marvel digital sales. Period. So, I actually prefer DC’s approach (nothing is better than cheating the creators).

  10. Avatar photo JFernandes (@jdfernandes) says:

"They should’ve crossed off the ‘Rise’ on the cover."

    Paul, you genius.

  11. Come on, who hasn’t been THAT drunk before? It’s nature’s way of telling you to lay off it for a weekend and it’s also a lovely way of testing just how strong the relationship really is

  12. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@edward – Is this in reference to the Lizard eating his kid?

  13. If that’s what you call it. Roll play can be fun, sexy time, paul

  14. Ellis and Deodato’s Thunderbolts was great. Get over it.

  15. @ghettojourno: Don’t worry, I’m well over it. Haven’t thought about that book in ages.

  16. best part of this podcast to me was from @ron about Hawkman. It’s true if Geoff Johns can’t explain it, then his history is too convoluted.

Also, I really want to know how you kill hobos with a cat.

  17. hahahaha

I only have three single issue comics in my library:

X-Men 205 (amazing issue with Wolverine fighting Lady Deathstrike in a single contained issue–I will never part with this–just cuz it is awesome).

The Uncanny X-Men 207 (why the title change in two issues?)

X-Men #1 all four covers sealed in a bag and unopened since 1991. I paid $3.00.

How much money are we working with?

Ron going to be rich with 4X25.

  18. Loved the podcast, but the energy level seemed really low.

    Y’all hung over?

  19. @ScorpionMasada: Nope.

  20. Maybe it was the S’mores.

Well, I’m having me some Blue Moon and might need to pick up a sixer of the summer brew they got out now.

  21. I think it makes sense that the two guys on Batman: TROBW are so alike, because they’re related, since the other guy was Nathaniel Wayne

  22. ghettojourno, got that Alan Moore vibe going.

  23. I’ve seen kids masticate comics–just drool on them and nibble off the edges.

    Still readable though.

I think when I go to get my beers I’m going to pick up some motherfucking s’mores. Haven’t had them shits in like years.

  24. Your brother has great taste in comic books.

  25. you guys should always make a point to discuss atleast one hilariously bad and or bizarre random comic every week.  Last week sentry: fallen son, this week rise of arsenal. next week, who knows?  But I want to have a small collection of those type of comics that I would never otherwise buy if not for the podcasts.

  26. Who’s the high-profile artist thats rumored to be coming to the fantastic four. I NEED to know–Edwards just doesn’t cut it.

  27. @jwaesch: It’s-so-bad-it’s-awesome books.

  28. This is just an interesting observation, but we have kids being eaten in comic books and then we have kids eating comic books mentioned in the same podcast.  It’s marvelous mastication!

  29. lizard eats kid that eats comic books

  30. I’m glad someone else finally mentioned the Quantum Leap thing. I’ve been saying it since ROBW was first mentioned, but was beginning to think it was just me.

I agree with everything said about Power Girl, especially the thing about her appearing in other titles and seeming wrong somehow.

Rise of Arsenal sounds AWESOME! That is all.

  31. Any podcast with Paul on is a joy. He should replace that Katers guy.

  32. I wish I had picked up Rise of Arsenal now. Killing bums with a cat?

  33. Captain Mar-Vell isn’t really "back". It’s pretty obvious that’s just the Mar-Vell from the alternate universe behind the Fault.

Also, there’s no need to mince words. Rise of Arsenal has been awful. I wondered if they could build something half-decent from the horrible ideas this story is based on… Well, they couldn’t.

  34. Really glad to hear your thoughts on Second Coming Ron.  Hopefully you guys continue to cover it down the stretch.

  35. Good show guys. Paul, Mystery Society was good, thanks for the recommendation.

  36. Who’s rumored tp take over FF? JHIII would be epic.

  37. @OnASunday: J.H. Williams is doing BATWOMAN.

  38.

I can see how Thunderbolts would get pick of the week. I’m just kind of shocked that the group was made by committee and not Captain Steve Rogers telling him who to put on the team. And how long do you think it’ll be before we’re calling him Cap’n Steve?

  39. @Conor: lucky bastard.

  40. @paul Is there any way I can get you to read me a bedtime story sometime?  Your voice has a very soothing tone:)

  41. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@vadamowens – I have submitted an mp3 of my reading of the complete Uncle Remus short stories to Audible.

  42. ooooh. That would be dreamy;)

  43. How on earth isn’t Paul working for NPR?

  44. = looks like someone spoiled the ending of ASM for me. (I tried to skip over but landed right on the words "lizard, eating, and kid". Oh well. I’d better toss the whole unread run in my longbox XD.

@NathanNicdao: I can personally attest to the fact that Ron and Conor are indeed real. Up until ECCC I suspected they were graphically rendered radio-personalities.

@j206: times are tough. I imagine NPR’s actually trying to weed out employees currently.

  45. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Sorry, but there’s a spoiler warning at the head of the show and that happened in the previous issue. Fair game.

  46. Yeah I guess I should have read it, but I wanted to savor the Bachalo art. Usually I read Bachalo works when I’m not happy. They’re good pick-me-ups. Now I’m gonna have to read them. =p

  47. No actually I’ll probably hold it off for another month or two. I’ll totally forget what happens by then.

  48. What was that about one version of Hawkman having real wings? Surely, whether they’ve been trad feathers or Truman leather, Carter and Hawkgirlwoman have always been into, er, strap-ons?

  49. Paul, are your soothing tones down to a spot of Skyping?

  50. It’s weird, this super power to kill any thread!

  51. @Mart — There was one point, after Zero-Hour, when they turned the Half-Thanagarian, Half-Native American Katar Hol (of Truman’s Hawkworld) into a Hawk "Avatar" who actually had yellow eyes and real wings that could pop out of his back. His series ended within a year or so of that change and the character went into limbo until the Carter Hawkman came back in JSA (I think that’s right).

  52. Oh Lordy, they did? Thank you. I remember hopping off around the time he suddenly started generating avatars!

  53. They did… I loved the character (starting with Truman’s Hawkworld and thru Ostrander’s Hawkworld and Hawkman), so I kept sticking it out through the avatar stuff, hoping it would get better. And actually, there was a little 2 or 3 parter written by Priest and drawn by Howard Porter that finished off the series that was actually pretty decent for its time. I remember being sad that it was ending just as it had a glimmer of hope.

Yes, I’m sadly one of the few people who CAN explain Hawkman’s horribly tangled continuity. I just… please, don’t make me. **hangs head in shame**
