The Best of the Week in Panels – 03/31/10

This week's comics panels strike a pose, make things corporately uncomfortable, and inspire fanboy joy.

Fantastic Four #577

Fantastic Four #577

Johnny Storm knows: whether you're fighting Galactus or just exploring the moon, it's never a bad time to stop and pose for an imaginary J. Crew catalog photographer. (I'll give him this much: it is a sharp spacesuit.)

— Jim Mroczkowski

Dark Wolverine #84

Dear Journal,

Today we went to Asgard and shit got real and I can't talk to Norman or Venom about it. I filled out a harassment complaint form but I seriously have no idea who to give it to. Do we have a Dark HR? I might just mail it to Jarvis. Totally psyched out. I just tried to spear a moth with an eraser nub and I totally missed. Tell no one, Journal.

Seriously. No. More. Teams.

Yours,

Bullseye

P.S. OMFG. Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker? Whodathought?

–Paul Montgomery

Blackest Night #8

The only thing better than one kick-ass panel is when it's one kick-ass panel that spans four comic book pages. Live, you magnificent bastards! Live!

— Conor Kilpatrick

  1. I love that four pager.  I think the most intriguing resurrection is Max Lord.  I can’t wait to see what they are going to do with him.  I love his interaction with Guy.

@Paul – "Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker."  "Tell no one, Journal."  When the hell are you going to write a novel? What are you waiting for? I want to give you some money.

  2. Thank you for that, Paul. Genius <3 (and, you know, I was hoping that panel would make the cut. . .)

And thanks for posting that gatefold, too, since I’d been hearing all about it.

  3. HA – Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker

  4. Can you really blame Daken?  I think it’s a genetic condition, having to make out with people spontaneously mid-battle.  Not that Jean would fill out a harrassment form.

  5. (Oh, and fantastic panel choices, all.  Jim and Paul both had me cracking up.)

  6. But would Jean make out with Daken?  I admit, I have to ponder this.

  7. I think the gatefold was THE panel of the week, absolutely fantastic. Now the page before it? Not so much. That panel definitely made up for it though.

A close second (for me, at least) is the big panel on page 8 of GI Joe Cobra 3, absolutely fantastic drawing

  8. That Blackest Night panel is FANSTASTIC!

  9. Until that point, I felt like all Blackest Night was, was a way to sell new DC Direct figures.

Now It’s to bring back everyone. Well… not Sue or Ralph. But everyone important…. And Maxwell Lord.

There are so many panels in that FF issue that deserve to be here. Cosmic upon cosmic upon cosmic. Jim definitely picked the best of the best though.

  11. Damn! If that Dark Wolverine was a DC book, would they feature it in the Colgate Ad?

  12. "Dark HR" heh heh… Do you think they have dark team building exercises?

  13. Thank  You Ivan Reiss!! That gatefold was my highlight of my week!

I will now buy anything with your name on the cover;)

  14. Great pics all. Had a good chuckle at Jim and Paul’s picks. And thanks for posting that gatefold picture. I haven’t been reading BLACKEST NIGHT and was very curious about who specifically got resurrected. I like some of those wild cards. Osiris? Max Lord? And Hawk? I’m assuming that Johns is going to ignore the whole ‘Monarch/Extant’ mess and make a clean start with the character.

  15. Jean would totally make out with Daken, if only because his phermones.

  16. as someone who’s not reading dark wolverine can someone explain the kiss to me?? is Daken gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) or is it a godfather, kiss of death type situation?

  17. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@wangman31888 – My understanding is that he’s bisexual, but that his sexuality is more a tool for aggression and manipulation than pleasure. Dude’s into control, basically.

  18. That Blackest Night foldout was orgasmic.

The Daken panel is disturbing because you can feel how uncomfortable Bullseye is… and lets face it, we’ve all been in THAT situation before.  Oooof.  Memories.

  19. Uncomfortable?  Bullseye’s spent half his life obsessed with a guy who wears skintight red leather.  This isn’t much of a stretch!

  20. With that Mohawk, I’m surprised Bullseye didn’t know better.

I mean, even Daredevil would have seen it a mile away, or.. he’d at least hear the enhanced heart rate… from below…

  21. @Crippler – Haha, speak for yourself! I have never been in that situation myself, probably because I have the best gaydar that a straight guy could possibly have. And yet, I have no clue when women are flirting with me. Hmmm…

  22. I don’t have anything to add about Dark Wolverine (Paul pretty much covered it), but now I *am* curious about when Crippler was in that situation. . .

  23. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Bullseye curled up in a fetal position after that…

  24. You guys should write at least the artist and maybe the writer next to the panels. Sure, I could look it up, but I am too lazy. Or link to the comic description on your page. That would be cool.

  25. Lemme tell you, a dude suddenly kissing you when you’re not expecting it can be very disconcerting. The very definition of a "WTF?!" moment.

Makes great revenge, though, when Ron’s hittin’ on your girlfriend. 🙂

  26. I don’t know why Bullseye didn’t see it coming. Dude’s got a target right on him.

  27. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    Boooooooooo!

    (hahaha)

  28. "Live, you magnificent bastards! Live!" Haha. This made me laugh out loud. Live indeed. I’m pretty confident that this gatefold trumps every other panel that came out this week. Ya just can’t beat a gatefold. Especially one that has such an impact on its universe, and is drawn by the phenom that is Ivan Reis.

The exciting thing about these resurrections is that (for the most part) there’s a clear editorial purpose for each one that was chosen. DC was wise to use Johns’ story to fix certain holes in their line-up, and it’ll be very interesting to see these characters settle back into the DCU. There is a reason that these heroes were the ones to return. Some (J’onn, Arthur, Max) are more obivous than others (Digger?), but I can’t wait to see where they go with this.

That Daken/Bullseye … uh … exchange was pretty fantastic. I’ll put money on the theory that Bullseye will be the one to kill Daken. Also, for the first time in years, I want a Marvel/DC crossover. A four issue mini with Daken vs. Damian Wayne. You could call it Bastards With Issues.

  29. @PaulMontgomery: Thanks for the clarification, i guess it still leaves the option for a godfather kiss of death
