UPDATE – NYCC 2011: Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips Bring FATALE to Image Comics

UPDATE – We got our hands on the video of Ed Brubaker played by Image at the panel and it’s kinda awesome:

Yesterday, we picked up on the subtle hint from Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson that perhaps something was coming at Image Comics from Ed Brubaker.  Today, during the Creator Owned Comics panel with Robert Kirkman and Stephenson, that subtle hint came true.  It was announced that Ed Brubaker, and longtime collaborator on art, Sean Phillips would be bringing their next creator owned series to Image Comics called Fatale.

Brubaker, who wasn’t present at the panel but appeared on a pre-recored a video to announce the project, revealed that the mini series launches in January, 2012  and is promised to be a blend of noir and horror, or a term we just coined, “Noirror.” The story spans from the 1930s to the modern day and focuses on a woman described as “THE Femme Fatale” with a mix of horror elements. Phillips art will be colored by Dave Stewart and they announced issue #1 will feature 2 covers, a “Beauty” version and a “Beast” version, both of which could be seen below along with the official description of the series from Image Comics.

  1. “a mobster who may be an immortal demon monster”

Um, based on that cover, I’d say he’s definitely a demon lol

But seriously, Brubaker and Phillips on a book is a must-buy for me. Definitely getting some “The Damned” vibes here, and I enjoyed that book a lot

  2. Kinda curious why it’s coming from Image and not Icon.

    • According to Brubaker(from an interview on CBR) he had been promising Eric Stephenson and Robert Kirkman he’d do a book with Image for a while, and the timing felt right. He said he would continue to do Criminal books w/Icon. This is fantastic news! I will buy anything with Brubaker and Phillips’ names on it. January just got a little more awesome.

    • Yes, this is interesting. I wonder outside of promising Eric Stephenson to do a series with Image, what other factors played into this decision.

    • If Sean Phillips and (probably) Val Staples are busy with Fatale for the next, he must be looking for a replacement on Criminal/Incognito. I suggest Francesco Francavilla.

  3. Yes! One of my favorite creative teams doing a book for Image! And those covers, God Damn Phillips!

  4. I love all things Brubaker and Phillips, so bring on a new series! (but keep producing great stuff from Incognito and Criminal)

  5. Looks cool.

  6. I was sold when i seen a monster in a mobster suit holding a tommy gun…. thats like the sickest thing ive ever seen

  7. Was already announced if you guys read the Criminal backmatter. 🙂

  8. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

That Beauty cover is straight-up stunning.

  9. Looks gorgeous. Definitely going to check it out.

  10. I get the feeling Brubaker needs to refresh himself from time to time. I think this is definitely going to be a good thing

  11. solicitations are always fun. guns, sex, secret cults, AND monsters? I love three of those!

  12. I’ll give anything Brubaker writes a try, and Sean Phillips ain’t too bad either, so, yep, this’ll be a buy for me. Are we to assume that it’ll be a mini with possible follow-ups similar to the model of Criminal and Incognito?

    • Im not sure that they know yet. He says at least 12 issues. Then back to criminal. Should be great.

    • Then back to Incognito again, I hope . . ?

    • One can hope yes..
I just cross referenced my collection list with brubaker’s wiki bibliography … Man he’s done so much great stuff.. Iron Fist.. a DD run.. a great XMen run.. Of course Cap…
Batman and Detective too…. What was i doing in 01 and 02 that got me to miss that… hmmm ….. oh now i remember …

Anybody know how good that Batman stuff was? think i may track those down.

    • The Batman stuff was good and is worth tracking down, especially the Detective Comics, which also happen to feature some lovely Tim Sale covers. I picked up the first four issues of his Vertigo Dead Enders series at the convention yesterday. I’ve only read one issue so far, but I’m intrigued. I do believe that he’s one of the most reliable writers out there, and I’ll give most anything he does a try. Not X-Men, though — I simply do not want to get sucked into that whole world again — same reason I haven’t checked out Gillen’s run — the characters simply don’t appeal to me at this moment of my life . . .

    • Ya.. ill track down the detectives.. .. ya tim sale is good…
i havent read deadenders… but i remember scene of a crime and the dead boy detectives from his vertigo line were pretty good too.
Ya your right… Brubaker may be the most reliable writer. Im a huge Ennis and Ellis fan.. and even they can sometimes disappoint sometimes. I just want to see what happens with “the boys” but I swear if i wasnt such a huge Ennis fan i would have dropped it already.
Ya i hear ya on the Xmen…. I was already off the Xmen for a while when brubaker jumpted on in 06. Its funny looking at my collection from the last decade.. there are huge portions of Just brubaker stuff.. cause i basically just start and stop reading the book when he starts and stops writing them.. .. His xmen run was great though.. cause if i remember correctly it took place mostly in space and involved the shiar.. i think havok was heavily involved.. so i was seeing somewhat out of the box xmen stories…
This Jason arron.. xmen schism ive been reading (just cause i love scalped ).. is okay.. i dont think its enough to bring the xmen back to life for me either though.

  13. On another website, Brubaker says it’s a 12 issue miniseries to start with and after that the plan is to return to Criminal. This is a must buy for me. I sure hope the added value articles continue in the back as well.

  14. Any relation to Madame Fatale?

  15. really looking forward to it !

  16. If you all are excited about this, definitely check out The Damned from Oni Press by the same creative team as The Sixth Gun.
