Hugo Nomination for Captain Britain and MI:13

The series may be no more, but that didn't stop the Hugo Awards from nominating Paul Cornell and Leanard Kirk's much beloved yet cancelled book, Captain Britain and MI:13 for Best Graphic Story.  Specifically the nomination is for the third volume, Vampire State, for the simple reason, I believe, that it was awesome.

The other nominees in the category include:

  • Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? Written by Neil Gaiman; Pencilled by Andy Kubert; Inked by Scott Williams (DC Comics)
  • Captain Britain And MI13. Volume 3: Vampire State Written by Paul Cornell; Pencilled by Leonard Kirk with Mike Collins, Adrian Alphona and Ardian Syaf (Marvel Comics)
  • Fables Vol 12: The Dark Ages Written by Bill Willingham; Pencilled by Mark Buckingham; Art by Peter Gross & Andrew Pepoy, Michael Allred, David Hahn; Colour by Lee Loughridge & Laura Allred; Letters by Todd Klein (Vertigo Comics)
  • Girl Genius, Volume 9: Agatha Heterodyne and the Heirs of the Storm Written by Kaja and Phil Foglio; Art by Phil Foglio; Colours by Cheyenne Wright (Airship Entertainment)
  • Schlock Mercenary: The Longshoreman of the Apocalypse Written and Illustrated by Howard Tayler

I think it's pretty clear that this one is a lock, and yes, I'm biased.

Marvel has issues #10 and #11 available to read for free on their Digital Comics Unlimited platform.

Comments

  1. I saw this on MArvels site last night. They were congratlating "the gang" and wishing them luck.  Assholes. I guess I’m still a little bitter about the cancelation.

  2. I miss this book. But I’m glad it’s getting some well deserved recognition.

  3. I’m really happy for Cornell and Kirk getting nominated, but I read the headline wrong. I thought it was like the BIG hugo award. Best Science Fiction. That had me giddy as all hell. Still a great award to take home, though. Just wish comics got a little more recognition at the hugos.

  4. Great to see it get nominated, but sad that it isn’t around anymore 🙁

  5. Well done to them. A great series that I loved from start to finish.

  6. There’s a distinct lack of Leonard Kirk art work in my life now that Captain Britain is over…

  7. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

If vampire missiles from the Moon don’t warrant a Hugo, I’m not sure what does! Go Cornell and Kirk!

  8. I really miss this series. Anybody think they’ll give Gillen a shot at an Excalibur type series? I mean I’d obviously love more Cap Britain but that seems like a close (and slightly more possible) second.

  9. I think the downfall of this series is that it launched as a secret invasion tie in. How it sold less than any one of the hulk or deadpool books is beyond me.

  10. Captain Britain wasn’t as good as iFanboy hyped it up to be.  Typical of the media though, to blow things out of proportion.

  11. Not enough hugs?

  12. @KickAss – again, bordering on trolling when you naysay every single thing that shows up. If your only purpose is to tell people something they like isn’t good, you’re not contributing anything.  Please keep that in mind.

  13. It’s up against really good competition. Imagine if this beats out Neil Gaiman and a Batman comic.

I dont think it’s going to happen……But I will be happy as hell if this does win.

  14. Are they ever going to put out a hardcover of this? I’m hoping this wins so we can get one. 3 trades is a bit too pricey and it doesn’t even include the annual.

  15. I wouldn’t hold my breath. We’re lucky there are trades at all, I think.

  16. Series may be gone, but does that mean there can’t be future miniseries or at least a one-shot here and there? Come on…NOT LIKE THIS!

  17. Hey come on, you guys are the media.  You critique comic books, I critique the media.  It’s no different than the people that critique Fox News, right?  Nothing personal, we’re talking professional comic books here.  🙂

  18. I loved this book.  I look at some of the books Marvel publishes and sells lots of and then I see this beautiful book fail and it makes me cry a bit inside… 🙁

  19. @KickAss: I disagree, the guys here embrace comicbook and comic culture and put it under a spotlight. In doing so they do have to critique the work, but on its full merit. You sir are not doing it with comments like this.

We are all talking professional comic books. Lets keep our comments professional as well. I wouldn’t post anything on this site that I wouldn’t feel confident in saying to these fine Gentlemens faces.

  20. Leonard Kirk is apparently taking over New Mutants, by the way.

  21. @jimski I THINK it’s just for an arc, but I’ll be giving New Mutants another shot when he comes on for sure.

  22. I hope this recognition will cause more Cornell/Kirk team-ups in the future. I really liked their Dark X-Men mini.
