Comics don’t take a vacation! New Comics for 03/12/08

Get to pulling this Wednesday’s books, and then let us know what you’re looking forward to most, what you’re dropping, what others should be buying and anything you’re thinking. Be heard, because we need you, iFanbase!

What are the iFanboys buying? Check it out here – Conor, Ron, Josh and Gordon the Intern.

I’m back from vacation this week and while I’m still catching up on reading the last two weeks of comics, there is no rest for the travel weary! This week I’ve got the Pick of the Week!

I’ve had four straight weeks of 17-20 books and that is worrisome for the ol’ wallet. But what can you do? This week I’m looking forward to the next installment of Green Arrow and Black Canary, Jason Aaron’s next installment on Wolverine, the finale of Joe Casey’s Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin, the The Lone Ranger and Tonto one-shot, and I’m going to give Tiny Titans one more try.

Bonus Question: Is it possible to cough oneself to death? Just curious. No reason.

Comments

  1. Um, I don’t see the new Ultimates 3 on the ifanboy list. Maybe you just haven’t added it? According to marvel.com it is dropping this week.

We all may want to forget about Ultimates 3, but it does exist. And some of us enjoy watching trainwrecks.

  2. Is Mighty Avengers good now? I stopped reading two issues in because it was taking so damn long to come out, but I’ve been thinking of picking it back up again.

Also, really excited about finally get Green Lantern 28 (there was a shortage last week at my shop, so we’re getting it now).

@flapjaxx: I don’t think it’s coming out this week, my shop always gets it and it wasn’t on the shipping list for this week… Marvel and DC’s websites are frequently wrong (Marvel once said Powers 28 and 29 were coming out one week after the other, and neither one of them came out)

  3. @flapjaxx – A reprint of ULTIMATES 3 #2 is out this week, that’s it.

  4. Serenity comics! Heck la! Good week. I’m so excited!

Other than that, it looks like a weak week. Booster Gold’ll be good… Other than that, not so much… Meh. Mehhhhh…

Bonus Question: I just bruised my sternum yesterday. Yawning, laughing, and coughing hurts. So today, I’d say yes…

  5. Hrm I dono some ok comics coming out this week the one im gonna be reading first is Fantastic Four then Booster. oh is anyone else having the problems of not seeing your pull list?

  6. Green Arrow Black Canary, Wonder Woman and Amazing Spider man.. I can’t believe i’m actually saything Amazing Spider man out loud.. I liked the last issue and i’m looking forward to it..

I think its possible to cough oneself to death..

  7. For some reason, I’m making hostile comments toward all the books I’m buying this week.  "Fine! So I’ll buy a Wolverine solo book.  Fine! So I’ll get the damn Firefly thing because they put Zoe and Wash and Mal on the cover!  Fine!  I’ll get Green Arrow/Black Canary because you guys talked me into it!"

The only thing I’m completely unresentful about is Mighty Avengers, because it’s going to be Iron Man fighting Doom with big polka dots in the art, and other than that, I have no expectations.  Yay!

I keep thinking I’m due for a light week, and it doesn’t shake out that way.  On the other hand, I’ve particularly been enjoying my comics for the last month or so; nothing really to complain about.

Bonus Question: Sure, it happened to a guy I know after he caught the flu at a comic book convention.  Your symptoms sound a lot like his.  (Hah, sorry, that was lame; I’m just working out my hostility toward my pull list.

  8. @ohcaroline – I hate you.

  9. @Conor Fine, I *won’t* buy Green Arrow.

I mean — get well soon!

  10. I’m very happy with this week.

It’s a really dense week, as i don’t have a whole lot of books but the ones I’m getting are all really really good.

i especially excited for Thunderbolts, Booster Gold, Batman: Conf (i was surprised by how awesome the first issue of this arc was), and Wolverine.

Bonus Question: I’d say there is a definate possibility. I’d look it up, but I’m far too lazy.

  11. There’s a lot of good stuff out this week Conor, I don’t envy you.  Walking Dead is this week, so that tops all.  Batman Confidential is also out and the last issue was rad, so I have high hopes.

Haven’t really been interested in this current Mighty Avengers storyline, dispite the fact I love Doom.  I’m giving it another couple issues.

BQ:  I coughed myself unconscious once, so anything thing is possible.

  12. Oh, the anticipation for another week’s worth of comic book goodness!!  I’m so excited!!

    I’ll be picking up:

    Amazing Spider-Man #553
    Annihilation Conquest #5 (OF 6)
    Atomic Robo #6 (OF 6)
    Avengers Initiative #10
Dead Of Night Featuring Man Thing #2 (OF 4)
    Empowered Tp Vol 03

    Nova #11
    Screamland #1 (OF 5)
Serenity Better Days #1 (OF 3)
    Wolverine #63
    Wonder Woman #18

Bonus: I think you can only cough one’s self to death if you have two other fanboys watching you asking, "Are you okay?"  "Can you breathe?"  "Why aren’t you answering us?"  "Stop coughing, and tell us if you’re okay!!"

  13. Yeah, now that I’ve checked around no other site says that Ultimates 3 #4 is dropping this week EXCEPT marvel.com. I don’t like that their own site is the least trustworthy of all. I don’t like that one bit.

BQ: I don’t know whether or not you can cough yourself to death, but I know for a fact that no amount of cough syrup can kill you.

  14. I’m probably looking forward the most to Nova #11, it feels like forever since I read the last issue.

This week has the first issue of Avengers: The Initiative that I’m not getting.  I just really haven’t been that happy with the series even though some of the young trainees/heroes have been nice to meet.

  15. I’m really looking forward to DMZ #29 and Gotham Underground #6, and I’m interested to check out Serenity too.

BQ: Seriously, where do you get these questions from? Sometimes I worry about the contents of your mind, young Conor!

  16. Yay!  A new DMZ trade finally. Other than that I’m just picking up Serenity I guess.

BQ: I’ve had a sore throat since Friday so I know it is possible.

  17. Books I’m getting this week include:

BQ: It feels like it sometimes…

  20. Another week closer to my wedding means the second week in a row with no books.  This sucks.

Hopefully, my Mouse Guard hardcover will have to do for now.  I’ve also got the complete Bone sitting on my shelf, so I can put off the montly books for a while.  BUT I DON’T WANT TO!!!!

  21. @adrian — I’m curious what you don’t like about Avengers:Initiative — since I’ve been ‘waiting for the trade’ for a year and they’ve finally decided to put it out!  Am I wasting money?  Is it already irrelevant?

  22. As God is my witness, I’m most excited about Wolverine.

    Wolverine.

And I gotta get outta the Wolf-Man business after this.

BQ- about 1% of the time, people die of whooping cough, and during the 1918 influenza outbreak… oh, I’m sorry; was that a rhetorical question?

  23. I can’t believe Gutsville #3 is coming out. I had written the series off as canceled or something.

Bonus: I asked my wife who recently had bronchitis-turned-pnuemonia while giving birth to our new daughter, and she doesn’t want to hear anyone without a 10" c-section incision on their abdomen complaining about coughing.

  24. Just a few for me this week, Walking Dead, DMZ trade, and I’m gonna try out Guy Ritchie’s GameKeeper 2, loved the first run with Diggle writing, we’ll see how this series holds up.

BQ:  I don’t know about death, but I’m sure you could dislodge some pretty important organs.

  25. I’m mostly excited about Walking Dead. I can’t begin to fathom how much more %#$ can hit the fan. Glad to see Gutsville again as well.

Garth Ennis’s last Punisher arc begins, as does, likely, my last Punisher arc. Unless they get Greg Rucka on the book. Which I doubt, but one can dream.

Avengers: The Initiative is kind of quietly telling the story of the dark side of the Registration Act, I think.

Where’s the love for The Goon? Are you folks missing out or just buying it in trade?

  26. iSteve’s pull list never fails to astonish me. I mean I probably get as many books but seeing it all laid bare like that does something to my psyche. Something like "Am I really buying that many comic books? I need to get outside more."

Anywho, I am not looking forward to Green Arrow/Black Canary. It is a sad thing to have Chiang leave the book. I believe his art was every bit as intergral to why the book worked as Winick’s script. Without the sweet Chiang art,I fear the ttle will slide into mediocrity where once it was exceptional. I’ll see how this issue works out for me. But a dropping is imminent.

I guess I am excited about Gotham Underground?

    Bonus: Sure. Why not.

  27. Green Arrow/Black Canary, Wonder Woman, Booster Gold…looking forward to all these.

Today I read ‘Y the Last Man’ trades 4 & 5.  I apparently need to ditch school more often…they were GREAT!!!

BQ: Get thee to the pharmacy!!!

  28. Decent week for me. I’m most looking forward to Mighty Avengers. Gotta see where BMB is going with this or if we’re in for another splash page overdose.

BQ: Either you can’t cough yourself to death or I’m Vandal Savage cause I’ve been coughing my head off for about a week.

  29. @ohcaroline — While Avengers:The Initiative hasn’t been the series I was expecting, it’s been somewhat entertaining.  Reminds me a bit of New X-men Academy X from before House of M, but the entire Marvel U sometimes gets in the way of the underlying story — like with the World War Hulk crossover issue.  The two issues involving Spider-Man are probably my favorite ones of the series.

The end of issue 8 and all of issue 9 I didn’t like at all.  It feels like one of those arcs that finishes a series off and I’m jumping off just in case.

  30. @Rofo – I am scared of your wife.

  31. I would also like to express my fear of Mrs. Rofo.

I have, at long last, stopped coughing.

  32. I’m looking forward to just about everything on my pull list this week.  I’m excited about everything I’m reading right now which is awesome.  I think if you aren’t excited about your pull list, then you need to change your pull list. 🙂  If I had to narrow it down, I guess the one I’m most looking forward to is:

    Batman Confidential# 14

  33. Avatar photo JFernandes (@jdfernandes) says:

Most looking forward to Wolverine and the Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse and DMZ trades.

BQ: If combined with tuberculosis, yes.

  34. Very light week for me as I’ll only be picking up Locke and Key 2. Was bowled over by the first issue and looking forward to see were it’s going to go.

  35. Wait.  Wait just a damn minute.  An issue of DMZ that ISNT a one shot?!  Holy crap!

Bonus Question: I’d recommend drafting a will.  Just for the sake of precaution.

  36. Booster Gold #7

Countdown to Final Crisis # 7

Serenity Better Days #1 (of 3)

Wallet, "Is there only 3 books there this week?"

Me, "Yes there is *interruppted by wallet’s happy dance*, but…"

Wallet, "Don’t you but me I will knife you."

Me, "Okay nevermind…  No one tell him I have a bunch of backissues and variants waiting for me at the shop.  He will knife me.  You should have seen what happened when I decided to get the Xbox 360, I still have a limp."

Bonus Question: Josh if you do die due to all the coughing, can your stuff be given away to the iFanbase?  Or do Ron and Connor split it all up.  If not I call the legos.

  37. @Rofo – WOW

  38. Everybody please buy both the DMZ single and trade.

  39. @misterS: What’s in it for me?

  40. I want to pick up Serenity in trade, but I feel like I should also support it in issues. Help! What should I do? Doesn’t buying both make me a sucker?

  41. I’m a single-ish kinda guy so I’m getting the comic, but if you want the trade, it’s finite so it’ll probably be along soon. Yes, buying both is kind of suckery unless you work for Dark Horse.

  42. I am a sucker then.  I’m also anal so after a comic is read I usually do not go back and read the issue.  I tend to get the nice hardcover if I can after the fact.

  43. Abe Sapien The Drowning #2

    Amazing Spider-Man #553

    Astounding Wolf-Man #5

    Bprd 1946 #3

    Dmz #29

    Fantastic Four #555

    Green Arrow Black Canary #6

    Gutsville #3

Hedge Knight 2 Sworn Sword #5

    Mighty Avengers #10

    Punisher #55

    Walking Dead #47

    Warhammer 40k Blood & Thunder #4

    And 2000AD of course.

  44. @ohcaroline & adrian Re: Avengers Initiative

So I’m biased.  AI is my favorite Avengers book at the moment and I didn’t think that was going to happen about a book so steeped in Civil War fall-out.  Dan Slott is good at bringing in continuity (new and old) without making it a burden.  He also grabs from the entire Marvel U.  This feels like a book that you could read to get a general idea of the tone of the entire Marvel line.  And it’s a good tone.  And Slott always give you tons of story in each issue (sometimes almost too much).  While the art didn’t grab me at first, I’ve really started to look forward to it in recent issues.  I’m not sure if that is because the coloring and inking tightened up or if I’m just used to it now.  I would suggest picking up the trade and the annual before making a final call on AI.

  45. Well, the great comic book drop continues.  My fiance has regulated me to just 8 books a week now with the overflow of what I would normally spend slipping into the wedding account.  Dropped this week is…

Avengers: The Initiative, Green Lantern Corps, Astounding Wolf-Man, BRPD: 1942, Punisher

None of these are any major loss, and this is actually nice because it forces me to buy what I really want.

Because of having to be picky, everything on my list is most righteous.  Most looking forward to Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin, DMZ trade (which I’m sneaking into my stack…shhhh!), and Serenity.  Joss Whedon could print that comic on toliet paper, and I would still buy it.

BQ:  I think you should only be worried if you’re diagnosed with "Whooping Cough,"  but I’m pretty sure that’s followed by a strong case of lockjaw, which is where the whole death thing comes into play.

  46. @reltib — thanks for the review of "initiative."  I’m pretty sure I will be picking the trade up.  This is probably a book, I should have been getting from the start, but I was annoyed by that Initiative ‘special’ that was  $4.99 for basically a bunch of reprinted scene and ads for other books.  I don’t think it actually had anything to do with this title but it pissed me off!

  47. But but but….BPRD 1946 is a 4 issue mini, and 2 issues have already come out.

Listen to me.  I sound like…well, not me.

  48. Aside from Walking Dead and Punisher, I can’t say I’m overly excited for this week’s books. Some certainly decent reads, but nothing like the last two weeks have been. It’s relatively a nice, cheap week for me though, and I can certainly use one of those.

BQ: I’ve been to the point where I’ve coughed so much that I wish I were dead, but have never died from coughing. But they say coughing is good – it means the body is expelling whatever is inside making you feel shitty. So while it don’t feel good, apparently it’s doing some good.

While I’ve never given birth nor had a 10-inch incision, I certainly bow to the pain tolerance powers of one Mrs. Rofo. As manly as I like to come off, I will give most* ladies credit for a higher pain tolerance than us lowly males.

    * – I say ‘most’ due to a little adventure involving my then future-wife, a Canadian vacation, a tattoo parlor, and an as-yet still uncolored butterfly tattoo.

  49. @ Josh- Trust me, I had the same dialogue with myself this morning.  But it’s between that and the new Firefly/Serenity book.  And I’m a mighty, mighty Firefly/Serenity whore.

  50. CRAP BPRD 1946 is on issue 3… No one tell my wallet but it looks like I’m picking up a few more books this week.  I remember when Josh first reviewed it I thought I need to go get that book.

  51. BPRD: 1946 is a five-parter. And the Tripwire 2007 Annual (Comics Magazine) reveals that this creative team returns in 2009 for BPRD: 1948. Yes!

I guess nothing happens in ’47 worth publishing.  Drinking tea at the base? Chit chat about things that happened in ’46? 😉

  52. I’m buying a bunch of books this week, but none of them have me that excited except for Walking Dead and Wolverine.

And no, you can’t cough yourself to death, aside from making your throat raw, the only effect coughing has is in raising your intercranial pressure. Yes, it does to nearly deadly levels, but since couging isn’t a continuous activity and that your intercranial pressure gets to drop down to safe levels when you’re not coughing then there’s nothing to worry about.

  53. As far as I know, I am the only iFanboy doctor, so finally i get a question up my ally!!!! Yes, it is quite possible for one to "cough oneself to death." Among other things that could happen besides simply chocking to death, persons with unstable heart rhythms could cough to the point that their heart stops beating…and there you go! So lesson today: go get a checkup you guys and gals…you want to outlive your collection right? And wash your hands before passing along that flu-infested copy of The Exterminators!

target242 aka: T. Scott Benefield, MD

p.s. can I be the official Ifanboy doctor?

    http://www.crockettkids.com

  54. Man I want a question up my ally.  I don’t know if he’d be my ally after though, or my new adversary 😉

I don’t know what I’m looking forward to this week.

The DMZ trade I guess, Madman #7 of course but beyond that…

I hope Spidey wins me back, I’m getting close to dropping it.  For me, it’s just not working since the Dan Slott arc.

Bonus: I’ll cough you to death RIGHT ON THE BEAK!

  55. NOW I remember,

    Booster Gold, and the Thunderbolts!

    thunder, Thunder, THUNDER, THUNDERBOLTS HOOOOOOO!

  56. This actually is a slow week for me…  I only have six books and I’m considering waiting for the trade on Serenity since that’s how I have the other Serenity mini series.  It’s only three issues.  I’m really excited for Wolf-Man to finally come out again, but disappointed to see that Savage Dragon seems to have been pushed back.

BQ: I think the answer has already been made clear.

  57. Most looking forward to Gutsville finally coming out again…and this’ll prolly be all she wrote for Marvel Comics Presents. I tried, really I did.

  58. I’m really starting to get overwhelmed with my comics. I mean, I’m in the 20 per week range, and I gots to be as frugile as possible. Its tough deciding which comics to drop.

I’m most looking forward to: Walking Dead, Fantastic Four, Green Arrow & Black Canary, and Serenity.

If only I had the willpower to buy just those four comics, I’d be set.

  59. @ Josh – Damn you, I put BPRD 1946 in my box and asked for my shop to get issues 1 and 2.  It just sounds so delicious.  Please tell me it’s worth as much as Lobster Johnson and everything in my world will be okay.

  60. @jstump – It’s better than Lobster Johnson.  It’s about Broom!

@target242 – You damn well sure can be the iFanboy doctor.  We’ll trade comic book advice for medical advice any day of the week.

  61. BETTER then Lobster Johnson!!  But he’s pulpy action heroy goodness.  I can not wait to read that book.

  62.

@target242 – You damn well sure can be the iFanboy doctor.  We’ll trade comic book advice for medical advice any day of the week.

Hooray! It feels great to be "official" something of iFanboy. BTW i am a pediatrician by trade, but most adult systems are the same…just bigger! LOL

And heads up to everyone: Doctor Who is not really a medical doctor….same goes for Doctor Strange and Doctor Fate. Dr. Midnite is and MetaDocs are excellent doctors and an excellent trade paperback!

    Respectfully yours,
    T. Scott Benefield, MD
    "…we’ve got a bleeder….!"

  63. I thought Doctor Strange was at least a surgeon?  Best signature by the way.
