C2E2 2013: Charles Soule Rides The Lightning as the New Writer of THUNDERBOLTS

Thunderbolts_14_C2E2You better start getting used to see Thanos in the pages of Marvel Comics. As the next big bad in the Marvel Studios films, synergy demands that he gets a lot of face time in the comics!

To that end, this summer sees Marvel’s next big crossover event: Infinity, which involves the big purple death-obsessed Titan. Plot details are sketchy but the Thanos-centric story will be written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Jim Cheung.

But that’s not why we’re here!

At today’s Infinity panel at C2E2 it was announced that rising star writer Charles Soule will take over Thunderbolts in August with issue 14. That’s the one that brings the title into the big cosmic crossover. Joining him with be artist Jefte Palo.

It’s been a fast rise for Soule since his critically acclaimed 2009 book Strongman from SLG Publishing and the 2010 Image Comics series 27. Earlier this year it was announced that he would be taking over writing duties on Swamp Thing and Red Lanterns over at DC Comics and now with Thunderbolts he stands as one of those few creators pulling double duty at the big two. Couple that with creator-owned projects in the works at Archaia and Oni Press and Soule suddenly find himself one busy writer in 2013.

Fans of the street-level antics of this series should be relieved that the story for Thunderbolts #14 involves this all-scoundrel team hanging back on Earth as The Avengers go off into space to deal with Thanos (presumably) and deciding that with the heroes away the anti-heroes will play… at wiping out the New York mob!

  1. They’re finally kicking Way to the curb. ‘Bout damn time! Too many cool characters in one book to allow him to continue to fuck it up.

    • Yes, a thousand times, yes! I was so saddened by the quality of the book… I mean… how can you fuck up a book with Frank Castle, Venom, Deadpool and Elektra as a team?!?!? Its almost law of nature that it should be awesome. Lets hope that now its going to be.

    • well one could say that none of those characters should even be on a team so…

  2. I might check this out, I loved his first issue of Swamp Thing

  3. I dropped it when Way took over.

But Jefte Palo is definitely of interest to me.

  4. I’ve tried reading some issues of Way’s Thunderbolts and must admit that usually I find myself skimming at some point — they’ve been pretty bad. So, a change in writers, yeah, that’s a good move . . .

  5. Looking forward to trying this again. Did not like the first issue and haven’t bought it since. Very good news .

  6. The first story arc, Thunderbolts #1-6 was mediocre, Daniel Way had “phone in” that script. The motivation was vague, key plot elements were done “off panel”, the five stars of the book seemed out of character, and everyone noticed!

For the second story arc, Daniel Way FINALLY wrote an interesting script. In addition, Phil Noto took over the art and combined with GURU eFX’s colors the book is incredible!!!

  7. So glad to see this change. Way was probably the worst writer in the history of Thunderbolts and was given the greatest cast to work with. Just God awful. How can you not make Deadpool funny and awesome? Somehow Way managed. And the art by Steve Dillon in the first several issues was horrendous. Every character in the book looked like either Beavis and/or Butt-head. Hopefully, Soule can turn this thing around…
