BOOM! Behind the Scenes: SUPERBIA #2 Breakdowns, Inks, and Colors

This issue is out tomorrow, written by Grace Randolph. There’s something very instructive going on with these process pages. This time, you get to see Russel Dauterman’s breakdowns, followed by his full finished inks, and the addition Gabriel Cassata’s colors.

For a lot of artists, I’ve found that the breakdown period is the hard work of storytelling. This is where you take the blank page, and turn it into a full sequence of events, hopefully told clearly. They don’t have to be rendered perfectly, but the mechanics have to be there. And that is the point of these posts. Enjoy the process.

  1. I’ve often wondered at what point from the breakdown to the finished ink is there no going back, no do-over for the artist. And how much regret(?), if any, with the end result.

I picked up Superbia #1, but forgot about it since then. Not because its bad, I just forgot. I’ll try the trade at some point.
