January 12, 2013 4:58 pm The game changer artists, the guys that redefined the look for popular culture were Adams and Miller for me. The Adams Batman is the most consistent definition of the character for the past 40 years. The Miller Batman holds the bookends, the "birth" of the character in Year One and the Near end in DKR. Mazzucchelli was doing Milleresque work on Year One (and in Daredevil) as great as he is. DKR added a lot of personality depth to the character that wasn't there before and visually created the feeling of a man so driven by his experience that you could feel the weight of it in the characters late years. THAT is why it's Miller for me. He was able to give everyone a template to fill in the visual and story gap. In the end many creators are chasing DKR because it's "what happens" as opposed to the O'Neil/Adams run that is part of "what happened".
January 12, 2013 4:12 pm I skipped all the comments so I could try to be honest about this. There are so many amazing interpretations of Batman so I just closed my eyes, thought Batman and went with the first image that came into my head. It was Frank Miller. The last panel in Dark Knight Returns chapter 3 with a bloodied Batman leaning against the wall next to the fresh corpse of the Joker. The second panel that I thought of was also from DKR of Batman on a horse. Again, no disrespect to all of the artists that have made an impact on the character.
May 23, 2011 8:22 am This was one of the most enjoyable episodes I have ever heard. The depth of knowledge in so many aspects of the industry that Marty has was a great treat.
Thanks again John!
May 8, 2011 11:53 am Good film. It did everything it needed to do for an origin story, and managed not to plod. i loved the artifacts in Asgard. Makes me think that those artifacts will be unleashed in the second movie leading to other stories/heroes (I thought it was Eye of Agamotto, if I'm wrong, NBD) to keep the connectivity of the universe. Loved the Hawkeye cameo. The tease after the credits was awesome. can't wait to see how that is all going to come together (the cosmic cube is in Cap right?) I am super pumped to see Cap and cant wait for the Avengers.
In the battle of superhero movies, Marvel studios is doing a great job. I hope Green Lantern is amazing but it's going to be tough for Warner to compete with what Marvel is doing. I just want as many good superhero movies as they can put out. Here is to hoping that is the case. GL has to be good, the next Superman needs to be good, and the next Batman.. well, that will be good. Cap looks great to me and I don't see how Avengers could be bad.
I would love if Marvel could get some of their licenses back. Good Daredevil, Ghost Rider and Punisher movies would be welcome. I don't think they will get Spider-Man back for a long time, and that is a bummer.
May 7, 2011 8:56 pm Well, maybe once Flashpoint nears it's conclusion, perhaps after, I can hope some folks free up some time. I see where they are coming from. From what is out there it sounds like "the universe will never be the same" after Flashpont. Keep up the great work John. You book 'em, I'll listen.
May 7, 2011 8:44 am A good actor had been cast. End of story.
May 6, 2011 8:52 am Look, the last "relaunch" didn't work. Loeb and Millar had other work that was more important to them come up. It's a shame that Ultimate X (good book) and USM (good book) got wrapped up in a poor relaunch. Now they are going back to the well with a couple of guys that want to write Marvel comic books and can put out regular work. It could be great and the pitch sounds like what I want out of the Ultimate line, a handful of good books in the same universe. If they function cohesively, all the better.
May 5, 2011 1:23 pm Uncanny #205 is a great story.
May 4, 2011 11:49 pm Joe has a viewpoint that is unique to his positions in the industry. He has had his fingers in a lot of pots over the last couple of decades and I enjoy hearing his perspective.
Just wondering if we can look forward to a stronger showing from DC in the coming weeks? They have a big event coming out and you provide a great platform.
