ZORRO #1

Matt Wagner is one of my favorite Batman writers.  I felt that I needed to get that out of the ways first thing.  You see because it’s important to show how I feel about this book.  As Connor said in his review Batman has taken a lot from Zorro and in this book it was a little vice versa.

I have been patiently awaiting this book since it was announced and was surprised to see it for this week when I was checking out my pull list online.

I remember being a little upset that this book was not being drawn by Wagner since his work on the Dark Moon Rising books.  There was also a promo picture done by Wagner that was amazing.  I must say though I did not let the news of Wagner not doing the art in this book from turning me away and I am really glade that I did not.  Francesco Francavilla’s art was wonderful and I’m not sure if he did the coloring as well, but it all came together.  The colors were fantastic and vibrant.  I loved seeing how dark some panels were and then how colorful others were.

Lastly the thing I think that made this first issue so great was the fact that we did not see Zorro other then in shadows.  I always liked to think that Zorro stuck to the shadows as much as he could when he started his career and it was great to see that.

As for bad things about this book, I found it a little confusing at times to figure out which of the two kids were de la Vega and his friend (I am writing this review without the issue at hand so I don’t remember his name).  I also felt that the jumping back and forth from past to present seemed a little disjointed a couple times and could have been handled better.

Overall if you are not getting this book, you should be.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
