Part 2 of the puppet story and things take an interesting turn. Instead of finding away to beat the twisted ventriloquist's dummy, Zatanna resolves to break the curse that turned him into the puppet in the first place. A spell cast by her father of all people.
With this issue Paul Dini turns the microscope back onto an aspect of Zatanna that he keeps coming back to, that being her relationship with her dead father. Z is being forced to come to terms with the fact that Zatara wasn't necessarily a perfect person, and it's this nod to reality that grounds this fantasy series and makes it that little bit more compelling. All along Zatanna has been a fun, solid book with nothing that exactly sets the world alight. However it feels as though, with this story, Dini has hit his stride. Suddenly, with the right hook, the book feels more weighty and substantial. But don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of fun at the same time.
The art by Chiang is more of that scratchy style he occasionally adopts on the grittier books that he's worked on in the past. At the same time he never loses that fluidity he always brings, culminating in an extremely striking final page set in Zatanna's family mansion. The atmosphere is pitch perfect.
My sticking point was going to be that we only get half a story. Suddenly half way through the book we get the ol' "to be continued...", and it's followed up with a back up tale of a young Zatanna written by Adam Beechen and drawn by Jamal Igle. I'm not a big fan of Beechen and I was convinced I'd hate the whole second half, except....it was delightful! It was light, frothy, totally inconsequential and left me with a cheesy smile a mile wide.
A couple of months ago I wavered slightly on Zatanna and whether or not I might drop it, but with quality like this I've left such thoughts far behind.
Art: 5 - Excellent
