I want to like this book, I really do.  That being said…

We have lots of great young characters in the Marvel Universe ranging from the Young Avengers to Runaways to- Well maybe just the those two teams.  Which is all the more reason why we need a great new generation of Young X-men.  Marvel was built on youth back in the sixties with Spider-man and the X-men but sadly that was the last real generation.  I know some will bring up the New Mutants, but in my book they have always been very hit or miss.  Which in my roundabout way brings me back to the Young X-men.  I like the concept of Cyclops assembling the “last” team of X-men, and even though I am not very familiar with any of these characters I want to find out more about them.  Unfortunately all I’ve been getting is characters who speak in the same voice with vague undefined abilities. Also, why is that whenever a new X-men team forms someone has to die?  Why, because this was successful way back in X-men 94?  At this point I’d be more surprised if everyone survived their virgin mission.

The one strong point in the book for me was the scene towards the end when the team, realizing they had been duped sit and discuss the shame they feel.  They realize that not only were they NOT chosen to be the last team of X-men.  They were not chosen because they did not measure up.  This is what we need more of from the book.  That’s the old school Marvel teenage angst I grew up on.  That’s what the book is going to have to give me if it wants me to stick around more than another issue or two.
