If Kieron Gillen can maintain the narrative momentum, this story line will surely qualify as one of the best Avengers story arcs ever. This arc has become a witty and rollicking allegory about young people finding their own way in the world. When Hulkling says, “We need to find a place away from parents. A clear space to do whatever we have to,” it has a double meaning. With Mother, the interdimensional menace who is plaguing the Young Avengers, Gillen may have introduced a great new villain to the Marvel pantheon of miscreants. Seeing Mother battle the adult Avengers someday could make for an excellent story. In the hands of Gillen, Kid Loki has become one of the most complex and fascinating characters appearing in any comic that I am reading. The child god of mischief aims poison dagger comments at his teammates, sowing self doubt in the mind of Hulkling, for instance. But then Loki appears to feel hurt that the other Young Avengers do not regard him with the affection he feels to be his due. This story arc has such a very cinematic blend of witty dialogue and action that it could easily be adapted into a movie, if Disney decides to extend the Avengers film brand. The art by Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton is simply spectacular. The artists’ experiment with panel design pays off as the diamond panels employed during the Young Avenger’s escape sequence seem to make the fast paced episode flow faster than it would in conventional, rectangular panels. Gotta love Marvel Boy’s … I mean Noh-Varr’s … sneers of concentration. The artists appear to love the character of Kid Loki as much as Gillen does, since they provide the young god with some of the most expressive looks of any character in the comic, ranging from faux innocence to enthusiasm to hurt feelings. Read this comic if you want to be awesome!
