In what is now the final issue of the series we get a glimpse of how the book was likely to function. Instead of being a proper “team” format instead it’s a group of young heroes who are friends. While there’s a bit of superhero action here, this final issue is really about Firestar and who she is as a person. While I’ve not read the original New Warriors nor Marvel Divas, it struck me that until now I didn’t know much about Angelica outside of her powers and relationship with Justice. This story I think paints a better picture of her, and while it acknowledges her past as someone who has been manipulated by Emma Frost, a cancer survivor, Justice’s ex, etc it doesn’t let her be defined by those events and instead just allows her characters true core.

The rest of the pseudo-team also get some very touching moments, including a hilarious scene of Anya practicing being the new Spider-Girl in front of a mirror. It really disappoints me that such a charming book is ending before it could give such character such a great exploration as Firestar, but it was fun while it lasted.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

Comments

  1. So sad that so many wonderful comics have failed in the past few years.  Nova, Hercules, Captain Britain, and now this title.  I’m not a comics evangelist, but it makes me want to announce from a mountaintop that more people should be buying comics so that great titles will have more of a market.

  2. Is Nova not coming back after Annihilation?

  3. I don’t think Marvel has made a definitive statement about the fate of "Nova."  But it seems that DnA are moving on to other projects like "Heroes for Hire."
