I want to start by saying that this was a fine standalone X-Men book. However, this book is titled "Schism" - and we were led to believe that the Schism was meant to be between Wolverine and Cyclops - and that doesn't happen in this book. But it really is a good X-Men book. I'm not trying to diminish the fact that the story was put together with good pace and the art style thankfully isn't the 'Saturday Morning Cartoon' style that was being used for the X-Men for a while there. But for a 5-story arc, this issue didn't deliver the goods on any kind of battle inside Utopia's walls. And I believe this to be a fair criticism because there was already a 4 issue arc serving as the prelude to Schism. What this book gives you story-wise is issue #5 of the prelude for all intensive purposes. And maybe it's my fault because I didn't want to budget in for the Prelude series, but I was waiting for the meat of the story to come along. And let's not be remiss, but I have to mention that this is a $5 double issue. At least the second part of the issue could've been used for some kind of conflict inside the X-Men camp, but it really wasn't. But again, I really want to reinforce that this was a good book with great story telling. The problem was that it wasn't telling the story I thought I was getting. It really told the story I thought I was skipping when I decided no to purchase the prelude. Granted, there are still 4 more issues before this thing shakes out, and I have faith that it will get more action than this. And the action in the issue was sparse. For being a double issue, the only fight we see from the X-Men is a very beautiful two-page shot of Wolverine and Cyclops taking on some Sentinels. Great shot, but I was hoping for more. Had there not been a 4 issue arc of prelude issues, I would've given this issue a "4" for the story due to the fact that there wasn't even a single instance of a member of the X-men team raising their voice at one another. However, since there was a 4 issue arc already in place that really could've told this same preface to the inevitable showdown, I'm going to give the story a "3". Hey, for $5 they have to deliver the goods in a more timely fashion than this. As for the art, I'm going to give it a 5. There really were some great and ominous shots in here that can't be overlooked. And Wolverine was drawn as he ought to be drawn. If anybody read the Fear Itself Wolverine tie-in, you know that there is a WRONG way to draw Wolverine. In this book, we're getting the X-Men in a great artistic form.
