This book is changing tone quite rapidly to become the dark story of desperation we knew it would become, but it has also changed how it tells that story. I don't think that's a bad thing, because it allows a lot of story to get told in the space of one issue by recounting the history, rather than counting on the reader to know something about it, as they did last issue. Of course, that might have only been to keep the German invasion a "surprise" to end #2 on for those not in the know. Since I do know a bit about the history, I remember how my heart sank when I saw the Polish soldier on horseback last month, and sadly there was no equivalent moment for me here in this issue. Magneto's family being shot comes close, but there's something about the layout and storytelling in those last few pages that is confusing. Although I know what happened, I know by conjecture rather than feel that it was presented clearly. Not to sound too harsh, because I did think this was very good, with fine art and an amazingly appropriate tone.
