The designs for this interdimensional fantasy world are not the most inspired; you never feel like there’s a real world beyond the bivouacs of these two armies. But the story is a great one for Rogue, who made a pretty understandable mistake in accepting the role of Hero for one side in a war where neither side’s hands are clean; she’s interesting as a solo character because she’s not always sure what she’s capable of, as her power level and knowledge constantly fluctuate, and Gage really gets that.

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this story arc in a comic before. Gage is telling a political allegory where the insect people represent a society where community is the highest value, while the cat people are determined individualists. I wish Gage were staying on this title. Perhaps he’ll get an opportunity to write another X-book in the future.

    • Yeah, agreed. Gage is exactly the kind of writer I love to see on the X-titles, because it’s so obvious that he’s read a bunch of back issues and knows the characters. He’s interested in past continuity but his stories aren’t ABOUT old stories the way continuity-conscious comics can be at their worst.
