Overall Carey did a solid performance for Second Coming. However the opening scene transitioning to the future in this issue was horrible. First you see Utopia from afar, next was Magneto's scene with the Nimrods taking the rest of the entire page, then the story shows what is happening in the future. Later the story moves back to Magneto. Carey should have put all the Magneto scenes in consecutive order so that the story would flow better. Also I did have a problem with the way he wrote Storm in this issue. Her characterization did not seem believable. I know Storm is seen as a goddess, but I do not think she would be talking like Thor. I just hope Carey continues to write stories X-Men fans really care about, not all that nonsense he wrote in the wake of the Messiah Complex.
Whenever characters open their mouths, they are square shaped and are too wide. It is kind of distracting while reading. The female characters of this book become unattractive because of this problem. Although Greg Land is criticized for his art style, he does step it up in this book and shows the readers he can draw amazing action scenes such as the Cypher and Master Mold scenes.
From the dramatic cover art by Adi Granov, I expected a lot to happen since the crossover is coming to an end, but nothing much occurred here. The story begins with Magneto giving Beast time to treat the injured by fending off a group of Nimrods. The story then shifts into the future with X-Force stalling time for Cable and Cypher to shut down Master Mold.
At Utopia, Storm leads Legion and the remaining mutants against the Nimrods. Storm is then restrained by the Nimrods using her electrical powers against her. Just when Storm is about to be defeated, Rogue and Hope arrive to save her. Hope uses a weapon given to her by Cable and destroys many Nimrods. Right away Emma Frost tells Cyclops that Hope is on the battlefield. Cyclops then decides to retrieve her and bring her into safety. Also Magneto's battle with Nimrods continue with success as he uses Utopia's metal to his advantage.
In the future, Cypher manages to take control of Master Mold's mind thus shutting down all Nimrods in the present and future. After a completed mission, X-Force plans on using the time portal to get back to the present, but X-23 is severely burned when she tries to cross the time portal. X-Force concludes that organic matter can not pass through the portal.
Back at Utopia, Hope expresses her hatred toward Cyclops and immediately the time portal opens up. Cable arrives with Techno organic virus plaguing his body. Although the Nimrods are gone, Bastion reminds Stephen Lang and Graydon Creed that the mutants are still trapped in the dome.
