The life of David Haller continues to plug along. Here we get a nice break from the insanity he has wrought and are delivered a superbly crafted reunion between him and his somewhat estranged mother. Si Spurrier is gifted. He centers this story around a mother-son reunion, keeping it very character-driven, without forgetting the current mutant landscape over at Marvel. He has made the most powerful mutant on earth a very human character and this issue is a great example both in his interactions with his mom and with Blindfold. This was very heartfelt and emotional. A 5 star story with great dialog and feeling. Perfect pacing. Just really really good.

The art here is good but nothing I look forward to. The story is clear and creative and Jose Villarubia does a great job with the colors, but the lines are not always appealing. There is a hefty amount of cross hatching that does not appeal to me and at times the characters look ugly (I know that’s a mean yhing to say, sorry). The art isn’t distracting, its just not as good as the story. I will give it credit in at least one area: Some of this story takes place inside David’s head (psyche) and the world these creators have created up there is imaginatively crafted and well thought out.

I would love to give away the shocking events of this issue that turn the story from a peaceful meeting to a manic frenzy, but I’ll cross my fingers instead and hope that someone else other than Ken reads it. I will tell you that it is executed perfectly and that David is heading for Scott Summers next. If you haven’t given this book a look, now might be a good time.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 3 - Good
