Much like Ron, and many of the people I’ve been discussing this comic with, I’ve been picking up X-Men Forever for its kitsch factor.  It’s Claremont being goofy.  It’s clumsily written with left field plot twists that seem absolutely ludicrous.

That expectation had me woefully unprepared for this issue.  It’s…it’s actually good.  Not “So Bad It’s Good”, but, actually, good.  It barely reads as Claremont.  And it’s good an interesting take on the future of mutantkind that no other X-scribe has dealt with before.  And it’s handled…appropriately.

I almost don’t know how to review this.

I was revieiwing a comic a few weeks ago, and I mentioned that in the writing community I come from, a common trope is to start off with something humorous, and then punch you in the gut.  That’s not quite what Claremont has one here.  Yes, he set you up with silliness and bombast, but he’s followed it up with, dare I say it, something to think about.  Oh, it won’t keep you up at night, mind racing in search of The Answer.  But it’s an interesting concept that I want to see expanded on.  I imagine this reveal is the centerpiece around X-Men Forever, and that he’s going to see this through a logical conclusion.  If he does, he’ll have definitely redeemed himself from some of his previous series (that awful Exiles run, for example).  If he doesn’t, he’s squandering an opportunity to be the kind of writer he hasn’t been for a long time: relevant.
