This really is a dark time to be an X-Men fan.

Near the end of this issue Wolverine turns to Cyclops and says “What the hell just happened Summers?” Summing up the first twenty pages of the book.  What the hell happened indeed?

Kyle and Yost have been two of the best X-writers of this millenium.  I enjoyed their New X-Men Academy X run, and though this title is rife with characters from that, I find this title nigh-unreadable.  Too many characters (who the hell is Senyaka? and who is Clarice?  and who the fuck is Lil?) running around doing too many seemingly consequential things that have zero emotional impact.

The black and gray heavy art is no help clarifying the story.  And the lazy “don’t draw the faces on background characters” trope that seems to be spreading through the X-artists is getting me to the point where I may drop every title with an X in front of it.

What Elixir should really do is forget about all the characters in the X-books and focus his powers on the writing and inking/coloring staff (I’m excluding Peter David from this, X-Factor has been quite enjoyable).

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. I second the "who the hell are these characters" comment? Lil? I have read something like 600 issues of various X-titles and I am still at a loss as to even a guess as to who she might be. Hey Craig and Chris, you may not be Geoff Johns masters of summarizing all of X-history in a single blurb, but throw us a bone. Put something on the recap page. Something. To me it undercut a story that otherwise was really good.

I actually like the Crain art, generally, but the Necrosha strain is beginning to show and if I see one more page of unnecessary digitally blurred art I am going to punch him in the face. Your style is indistinct as it is…. and now you are deliberately blurring it? Come on.
