I love me a good retcon. I mean, I can't imagine Layla Miller was conceived as the synthesis of Tru Davies and Jack Harper back in the House of M days of her origin, but Peter David (who was a fan of Tru Calling based on his blog entries) threw this amazing curveball, and while a tiny part of me protested that Hey, I love her catchphrase, whaddaya mean that's not her power?, the rest of me just went, Ooooh, that's a sweet twist.
Particularly in the middle of a time travel story that includes the conceit of doomlocks, Macguffins that would allow for changes to be made in the timeline, it was deeply satisfying to have the central character of this plotline reveal that her entire purpose is to preserve the timeline and keep fate on its course.
Tru Calling's second season was cut short, but the plan was to explore the concept of preserving life that is now soulless, so this story may just hit that sweet spot of wistful fandom for me. I was thoroughly, perfectly satisfied by this conclusion of the time travel story, and I am again eager for Layla's next return to X-Factor.
