Squish! Squish! That’s the sound of me wiping tears away at the news that “X-Factor” is going to be cancelled. I haven’t read every X-Man comic, but given that the X-Men were quite bad in the ‘90’s, I suspect that Peter David’s current run on “X-Factor” may just go down in history as one of the best runs on an X-comic ever. This volume of “X-Factor” ranks right up there with Chris Claremont’s first run on “All New X-Men,” and Rick Remender’s recent run on “Uncanny X-Force.” David has planted many narrative seeds with his stories that I suspect will continue to influence future X-writers for years to come. And to think Peter David turned out witty, often funny, well-characterized stories using mostly B and C level characters! I hope most of these characters find homes in other X-books when “X-Factor” ends. This comic did have a pretty long run given that Wolverine hardly ever showed up to goose sales! Sad to say, I was beginning to fear that Mr. David was going leave off on a sour note. “Hell On Earth War” has up to now lacked David’s usual panache. But I see signs of the narrative gaining momentum with this issue, as the story presents some interesting questions that require answers. Did Mephisto really win the war without killing Tier? Is it significant that “Tier” means “regal?” If Guido has no soul, why is he so upset about the death of Monet? Why did Monet essentially commit suicide by battle with Guido? Will Monet stay dead, or will Layla do her thing? Given earlier events, I have to wonder whether Theresa will show up in this arc since she is now the goddess, Banshee.
The art in this comic is good, but I wouldn’t rate it as great. Leonard Kirk really doesn’t have to draw much in the way of backgrounds since so much of this story takes place in gloom and caverns. Sometimes figures like Shatterstar’s are oddly posed and proportioned.
