My new roommate has talked about going back in time and paying for Rob Liefeld to go to art school.  It seems Liefeld is nearly every comic fan’s punching bag.  And I understand it.  There have been books written about his failure as an artist.  Haha, he can’t draw feet.  Hahaha, Check out Cap’s gigantic rackRob Liefeld sucks!!!!

But, occasionally, you’ll find an issue that, while it’s no masterpiece of art, also isn’t that bad.  This leads to the theory that maybe Liefeld isn’t a terrible artist, maybe he’s just a mediocre artist who took on too many projects too early in his career.  Maybe he’s not so much untalented as, well, overambitious.  Quantity of work over quality of work.

I feel that’s a problem for a majority of artists.  And poor art is what’s been bogging down the most consistently well-written X-book on the stands.  So, while the art on this issue is by no means perfect, Lapacchino’s pencils are far superior to any of the work I’ve seen in this book in the past couple of years.  The wide angle shots are a little spare for me, but when she focuses in on faces, I love her work.  Davidson’s inks seem to suit her style well.

I do worry for Shatterstar, though.  Apparently, Rictor has gotten him interested in pirates.  And being a pirate fan in the Marvel Universe doesn’t bode well these days.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. Lapacchino can clearly draw some nice T&A, which a Vegas story can’t do without really, but everybody seems to love Paco Medina’s stuff on the new X-Men series, and I think Clay Mann’s work on Legacy is great.  Delotto’s work was pretty wicked on Sex and Violence, but Kaare Andrew’s stuff isn’t for everyone; guess you’re talking about Portacio’s stuff on Uncanny in particular, which I simply haven’t pulled at all, and I thought Bachalo’s recent work on that X-Men one-shot was sub-par for him, so yea, current X-Men artists can’t really compare with my fave X-Men artists from back in the day:  Paul Smith & Romita Jr. in their prime, and Jim Lee also.

Not sure why Longshot winning in Vegas would gain Hela’s attention, not like he was gonna die or anything, guess we’ll find out later…maybe.
