I enjoy WORLDS’ FINEST so far, plain and simple. It’s not incredible, but it’s not bad, and there’s potentially some solid intrigue to be had in its tale – that, and maybe a more interesting angle on Darkseid’s inevitable return than might exist in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE alone.

My main gripe about this issue comes in the flashback sequences, which fill in more of what Karen and Helena have been up to these last five years since arriving from Earth 2. The art (because these bits are done not by Perez, who does the “present” stuff, but by one Kevin Maguire, who draws this ridiculous pouty-lipped faces on every girl on the page) rubs me the wrong way. It’s a bit cheesecakey, and stiff to be sure, and though I appreciate the approach of using a different art team to make these sequences appear different, I think the choice of team was, perhaps, not the best.

Anyway. Not a must-read, by any stretch, but I see some potential for this series to be part of a cool corner of the DCnU, and hope it makes good in the coming months.

  1. I agree. I liked the tone of the first issue more, it felt lighter and a little more fun. I worry about the treatment of Karen Starr in this book as she seems to own a remarkable amount of skimpy clothing. Maybe it’s a minor thing but I found it distracting.

    • I find so far that her depiction seems more tasteful (though that’s relative at best) when Perez is doing the art: admittedly, in this issue, it’s pretty much entirely when she’s in costume. The other artists they brought on for the flashback stuff seemed far too obsessed with her physique, and I wonder if it will be a regular thing to have Perez do only half the art all the time.

  2. Really enjoying this title so far. Agree about the uneven tone in art and muddled flashbacks, but find the characters, their origins and the main goal very intriguing! Can’t wait for next issue
