This series has been an excellent addition to Marvel’s literary adaptations “line”, and this issue is no exception.  I used to avoid books because of Skottie Young’s art, but for this book it is perfect.  His renderings of the main characters add to the fantastic setting, and his Dorothy makes the reader very sympathetic towards her.  In this issue he brings to life the Kalidahs, bear/tiger hybrids (giving us the “tigers and bears” of the movie’s song) and the Queen of the Mice, two elements which allow Young to show a variety in his art.  As for Eric Shanower’s writing, he does a great job of adapting Baum’s words but also of making the characters his own.  These are characters that he loves and he takes great care in maintaining the main conceit of the plot while showing how ironic it is, and there are many times in this issue where he does both.  At a certain point, it will make more sense to get this in trade than in issues, but as this is only issue 3, it’s still a great time to pick up singles.  If you are an Oz fan, or looking for a comic for kids, or fans of Shanower and/or Young, or all of these, definitely check this book out.

  1. I couldnt agree more on the fit on Young’s art with this book. I really hope they due it justice in a beautiful hardover edition when all the books are done.
