I was already loving Wonder Woman over the course of these past four issues, but with issue #5, she’s firmly taken the spot of my favorite “new” character of the New 52.

Obviously WW is one of the oldest DC characters around, but I know I haven’t seen her like this before, and I’m eating Azzarello’s story up. The distinct Greek myth aspects of the story are fantastic. The first four issues served as a great introduction of Diana’s new paradigm, and finally in issue five I felt like the greater pantheon of the new DC really opened up.

This single issue had everything that I’ve loved so far about the series from action to great dialogue, to interesting new characters (I LOVE Lennox and can’t wait to get more of him!) to a really quirky sense of humor. I can’t wait to see where the main plot line goes. Azzarello’s got a lot of engaging irons in the fire with three major mysteries that grabbed me and haven’t let go (the inheritance of Zeus’ throne, where Zeus left, and what’s going to happen with the baby). It’s all tight and well thought-out.

I should touch on the art for this issue simply because this is Chiang’s first breather issue. Being a huge fan of his art in the first four issues, I couldn’t help but be concerned about the shift, but I am happy to say that Tony Akins did a fine job. Editor Mark Idelson should be proud of finding the perfect fill-in artist for Chiang’s outstanding work. It’s close to the first issues while still being it’s own thing.

I’m guessing colorist Matthew Wilson has a great deal to do with that consistency. The colors as always are bright and distinct among all the comics I read from week to week. It did take me a bit to adjust to the different art because Akins is really close to Chiang and clearly inspired by his designs, but it grew on me very quickly. I’d never want to see Chiang go off the book permanently, but I wouldn’t be sad to see Akins take the helm for a while either.

This was my favorite issue so far out of the first five simply because it moved quickly, and I really liked the introduction of Lennox. He’s a great character, and I can’t wait to see how he fits into Diana’s world. I want to see her develop a team of Greek heroes and do cool stuff, and this issue hints at such a future for her.

Story: 5 - Excellent
