Until I see how Brian Azzarello ends this arc, I don’t know how to feel about this issue. It felt very transitional: We get an interlude of Wonder Woman and friends — and Strife, who’s inexplicably still hanging out with them — rocking out at one of the most sedate heavy-metal concerts I’ve ever seen. Meanwhile, the real action’s going on back at Paradise Island, where an epic magical throwdown between Hera and Hippolyta is built up — quite beautifully, I might add — but never shown. The Paradise Island story felt much more engaging, which makes it all the more apparent that Wonder Woman is kind of a bit player in her own story here. But if the payoff for that is that we get a great ensemble cast built up for Wonder Woman, then hey, I’m happy for it. Random observations: 1. What is with all the puns in this issue? “Split happens.” “No, War.” “No war?” Did Diablo Cody help with the script? 2. I may be crazy, but the band Diana’s listening to looks uncannily like Dethklok. (Specifically Nathan, and an inexplicably muscley version of Toki.) 3. Nice axe, Hera.
