I think people tend to over think writing Wonder Woman, and make things too complicated for themselves. Figuring that Wonder Woman is one of DC's iconic three Trinity characters and the standard bearer for all females in comics they get weighed down by continuity, politics, femminism, the iconic brand and editorial decisions which see her character acting in wildly different ways for company wide events.
The last real firm take on Diana was Greg Rucka's run on the character, which focused on her links to Greek mythology bringing in the gods and myths as active characters in her life. Whether or not modern readers really want to read about the greek gods in their superhero comics, at least Rucka had a voice for the character and she was something more than Superman with breasts or the calm mediator between Superman and Batman.
Somewhere within her Gail Simone has a voice for Wonder Woman, I know it. Her run on Birds of Prey gave us multiple female characters all with distinct and strong voices, and brought Barbara Gordon to the forefront of the DCU. I have faith in her and I think she gets the fact that Wonder Woman's stories can be just as light and fun as any other book despite the traps the character can present.
With issue #20 it seems like Simone might be getting her footing, and finding her own way into the character. It's fun, and that's the first time for a long time that the title has been since its relaunch. Wonder Woman gets sucked into another dimension, or psychic realm or something, and meets Beowulf .
What's not to love about a story where Wonder Woman meets Beowulf? (And please no paraphrasing Annie Hall and saying that you never buy a comic where they make you read Beowulf).
The answer is, nothing.
Well at least nothing that DC has done with the character in a few years.
