This is another very solid installment of what will surely be considered a classic run in the history of Wonder Woman. Perhaps Brian Azzarello is the best Wonder Woman writer ever, but since the adventures of this character date back to circa WW II, I’ll have to leave that judgment to someone who has read much more of her history than I have. In this issue, Zola finally gets her baby back, but we know this will lead to more conflict, for two reasons. First, because Ares knows that the child is powerful, and rescues the baby only to willingly return him to Zola. War appears to be playing a long game. Secondly, Strife appears to be delighted by the current turn of events. Azzarello’s story is evidently shaping up to involve Zeus’ first child, who comes into conflict with Poseidon in this issue, and Zeus’ latest progeny – Zola’s baby. This issue gives us more of Azzarello’s vision of Diana as the warrior woman with a heart of gold. Demeter is touched when Diana sets aside her mission in order to show concern for the goddess of the harvest. Demeter tells Wonder Woman, “You came in my house with a purpose. But thinking me wounded … my well-being became more important.” Art chores are handled by four different creators, three of whom do their best to limn the style of Cliff Chang, with the results being generally acceptable to good. Chang is responsible for the last three pages, and this section has an elegance that is mostly missing from the rest of the book. The last panel in particular is very expressive. Wonder Woman holds the baby while Zola looks lovingly at her child. Hera is clearly perturbed, while Strife pours her mother another glass of wine and savors the queen of the gods’ discomfort.
