WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS #5

We get a whole lotta mutants and guest stars in this issue: Angel, Colossus, Logan, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Storm, Shaman, Snowbird, Aurora, Professor X, Citadel and even an appearance by Hulk and Wendigo!

As I read this, it seemed like the whole book was just one long flashback, which it was to an extent. By the end of the book, you get a payoff that makes the whole flashback make sense, but there is still very little Kitty Pryde in this issue, where she is supposed to be the co-star. Ultimately, it’s a GOOD story, one that gives us a glimpse into Wolverine’s past exploits and search for answers to his origins WITHOUT interfering with continuity.  The art is pretty solid, if a little bit plain, but effective in its hard lines and perfect facial expressions.

A good read, but it makes me nostalgic for the old Alpha Flight. Remember when Wild Child was a good guy? And what’s with Snowbird, huh? An Inuit Demigoddess who looks like Barbie, wears tights and works for the Canadien government? Ah, good times.

  1. I have to say I was disappointed by this issue. It was an ok story but not the one I wanted. I wanted the confrontation with Alpha Flight. I wanted Puck and Sasquatch and Guardian. I know that first one wouldn’t work if Kitty was going to be around, but Van Lente could have cooked up something better than this.

Problems I had: 1) Wolvie as the leader of Alpha Flight? Can’t see it. 2) Was Marrina with them way back then? I thought she joined the group post-Wolvie’s departure, but I admit I’m fuzzy on my Alpha Flight chronology. 3) Logan’s Canadian government exposition. Really? Does he really care about any of that?

THings I liked: 1) Shaman deciding he did like the suit after all. 2) The reason behind Wolvie leaving Canada to join the X-Men. That was some nice ret-con right there.

After the last two great issues, this was a little eh, especially for Alpha Flight’s first appearance. The art didn’t not knock my socks off either, but it did what it needed to.
