When Jason Aaron sent Wolverine to hell at the beginning of this series, I wasn't too convinced. It didn't feel fresh enough and I've not always been a big fan of these existential, voyage into the psyches stories. Having said that my opinion was definitely coloured by the fact I don't like Renato Guedes. With the advent of the equally divisive Daniel Acuna, my love of this book soared and this final chapter of the latest arc was no exception.
This isn't an original story, because the X-Men spend frankly far too much time inside each other's minds to ever be considered healthy. Aaron however acknowledges that fact outright, and I suppose it's to be expected when you consider how many mutants through the years have had psychic based powers. There is a freshness here though and, more importantly, it's downright hilarious. To begin with the scripted banter between Dr Nemesis, Fantomex and Storm brilliant, the kind of thing Warren Ellis used to be able to do in the halcyon days of The Authority, but still very much with Aaron's voice rather than anyone elses. This leads through to the visual gags employed as the female team members walk through Wolverine's often disturbed psyche. Sure it's a little flippant, but it pays homage to X-men history and in a way even acknowledges just what kind of person an almost immortal X-man would truly be.
I know the art is an acquired taste, but I honestly feel that it really pops. From the flow of the lines, to the sound effects and the vibrancy of Acuna's colours it's work that really jumps from the page. He executes the humour really well, and together this is a really effective creative team. In short this is brilliant entertainment. It's an X-book much like X-Force, in that it loves all that continuity but plays just fine in the corner by itself. Aaron is embarking on a big-ass event of his own in the summer and it has to be said that it's a privilege that's richly deserved.
Art: 4 - Very Good
