It appears that we are now in the build-up period for the next Wolverine movie, which means that Marvel is seeking to support and capitalize on the film by releasing a whole lot of Wolverine comics. Nothing wrong with that. I’m in favor of capitalism and comic books, especially when the comics are of good quality, like this one. I write as an only occasional Wolverine fan, as I prefer my superheroes to be heroes, rather than antiheroes. But even a lukewarm fan of the hirsute Canuck can appreciate the likes of this “Wolverine” and, for that matter, Frank Cho’s excellent “Savage Wolverine.” Marvel must be real happy to have Paul Cornell back, as they allow him to play with one of the most valuable toys in their chest, and Cornell does not disappoint. Mr. Cornell very deftly sets up a mystery in which an evidently mind controlled real estate agent commits mass murder in a coffee shop. After Wolvie knocks out Mr. Real Estate, the man’s young son is possessed, engages in some mayhem, and flees the scene. Along the way, there are some nice character touches, such as when Logan plays psychologist, and tells the boy, pre-possession, that he shouldn’t look at the carnage his father wrought. Wolverine says, “No, don’t look. You think you want to see. You don’t.” Cornell gives us some insight into how Wolverine perceives the world. With his hyper-olfactory sense, Logan is attracted to coffee shops where he can smell a couple of dozen coffee flavors on offer. Alan Davis’ pencils are not bad, but not exactly a major selling point for the book. Wolverine has a nude scene where he is pretty much lacking an ass. The real estate agent is suitably average Joe looking, but his son is so pudgy-cheeked that he looks like a caricature of a child.
