When I’m writing an issue synopsis for the Wildstorm Resource Wiki and I find it’s getting a bit long, I take that as a good sign for the issue. Such has been the case with last week’s Stormwatch PHD #20 and this week’s Wildcats #9. I feel like both issues did a great job of taking the smaller page count and packing it full of a very well thought out story. But both issues didn’t leave me feeling like the story stopped because of the page count like previous World’s End issues have. This could have easily turned into a “the Wildcats meet Majestic and they fight” but instead Gage takes time in this issue to give us some interesting setup before we reach the inevitable confrontation between the two in future issues. It starts off by doing what Gage has done best during World’s End which is dig up forgotten Wildstorm characters and use them, even if it’s just for a cameo, which is the case with an old Stormwatch villain showing up at the beginning of this issue. I have to mention too that before the Wildcats even get to
My personal favorite moment was between Jodi Slayton and Grifter. It was such a genuine heartfelt moment that it reminded me comics are at their best when in between all the cool battles, we get meaningful character moments like this one. Not to mention it also doubled as a tease for possible future Team 7 stories. And the connectedness of the Wildstorm titles is still being handled well as Majestic updates Spartan on the status of Stormwatch and The Authority. Finally, Gage gives an interesting new concept concerning Coda warriors which leads us to an awesome cliffhanger at the end which resolves a question I know many fans have had since World’s End began. The cliffhanger and all the setup in this issue really leave you wanting to find out what happens next.
The Team Achilles backup story was interesting. It’s been a long time since I’ve read Stormwatch: Team Achilles so I’m trusting Gage that since a lot of time has pass within this backup story, that it still fits well with where the series left off. People have talked about this backup bringing closure to the Team Achilles series which was abruptly ended due to controversy. But I don’t see how that’s possible with this backup only being two parts. I’d be more inclined to say it’ll probably answer some questions but leave room for more in the future. It’s possible this is designed simply to bring the team back into the Wildstorm Universe. But we’ll see where this goes when part 2 is presented next week in The Authority #9.
