It probably helped that I was absolutely giddy to read this, but everything about this blew me away. This book made me laugh, made my eyes widen many times, and left me dizzy with anticipation as it strung me along like a drooling fanboy reveling in the wonder of what was to come next. It probably helped that I'm a sucker for nearly anything involving Black Bolt, but the way he was handled here, even in defeat, was marvelous. That alone speaks volumes to both the elegance and the big action beats you get with Abnett and Lanning. Black Bolt is not someone who should be defeated often, or it would lose it's meaning. Guardian's dialogue picks him out as one of the only warriors prepared to mount a defense amdist the confusion of the attack, yet he's off guard just enough to be stunned and sucker punched before the attackers run away. And it's not just those big action beats that make this book. It's the small moments. Maximus barely has to get more than a single speech bubble to make me smile. Vulcan's impudence in being introduced to his royal guard shines through without being overbearing. The very naming of the military operation had me calling aloud with premature shock over what might be about to go down. And Ronan. The Accuser. Well, it's more like Ronan the Heartbroken Eavesdropper. The icing on the cake is the art, which is crisp and brilliant. Paul Pelletier is welcome to draw any comic book he wants, as far as I'm concerned. The only even minor flaw I can find in this is one moment of lettering when Polaris mentions something about speaking in italics, but the speech is in bold. When that's the only thing a born complainer like me can find to pick on, when that complainer is not able to write a review until long after reading because he's still calming down from what he read, you've got a damned near perfect comic book.
