Oh yeah, this just happened.

War Heroes, a interesting little series by Mark Millar continues. I think #2 came out sometime in 1974, give or take. I kid, but honestly I was so excited about seeing this series on the solit. because I didn’t think it was coming out. The first two issues established a world where pills give soldiers super-powers. The first two issues were very grand in scope, which set up a nice world  but left readers with very little to hold onto character-wise. I don’t think this could have been an issue one, but I think it really could have been a #2.

This issue was short but sweet. We find our super-powered platoon facing off against a threat who calls himself Afrite. Once the story picks up it doesn’t let down for a single panel. While Millar creates a unique world and grounds it in realistic dialog and good characterization I think the tip o’ the hat goes to Tony Harris and JD Mettler for the art and colors.

The battle in this issue, which is most of the issue is spectacular. The layouts are smooth and the whole issue feels like a blockbuster film, similar to Millar and Hitch’s work on Ultimates 1 and 2. Additionally the muted colors create something of a bleak and murky world.

This was a great issue and I hope not to wait much longer for another.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
