If I can get over how much I don't really care for the way the plot has evolved since Williamson came on the book, this issue would be...okay, I guess. So I'm trying to review it on its own merits.
The script is okay...doesn't feel overly wordy. I question the decision to roll some BLACKHAWKS characters into VOODOO, but I guess that's what happens when a book gets canceled. (I'm not reading BLACKHAWKS, but I think this issue of VOODOO may have a fairly significant spoiler for BLACKHAWKS #8, so if you're reading both, read that first.)
Anyway, I like Basri's art as ever. I think that's one of the major reasons I keep coming back. That and the fact I like Voodoo's powers and design. But ever since her "original," Priscilla Kitaen, came on the scene, I've just really not liked this book nearly as much. And last month's complete alteration of Voodoo's character looks to have stuck...and basically, it's just not good. This has turned from a book with some interesting grey area to one that's just kinda cheesy.
I suppose it's possible Williamson can't really be blamed. Ron Marz was reportedly taken off the book because DC wanted a different direction. Whether or not the direction was prescribed by editorial, or conceived of by Williamson, may be something we can't get a clear answer to.
But whichever it was, I just want them to know: you lost one of the most interesting stories to come out of the relaunch. Good job.
