I was on the fence after VOODOO #1. But VOODOO #2 does enough that I’m probably here for at least the first arc.

This time around we live in Voodoo’s head and hear her internal monologue, though it’s mostly very brief snippets. Early on this can be a little confusing – she drops a lot of references to things, names and such, some of which we don’t know yet. But that’s okay.

Voodoo’s abilities – her shapeshifting and telepathy – are on display now, and her character begins to come into focus over the course of this issue while still maintaining an air of mystery. I don’t know how long this will keep working as a formula, but for now it keeps things interesting. She’s also clearly a bit conflicted over what she’s being forced to do, and that’s good; how sympathetic a character she is was left sort of up in the air after last issue.

The humans who are hunting her are also still a major feature, and that’s good – there’s a lot of potential for a good dynamic from both sides.

The art remains very attractive, and anyone who was worried that VOODOO #1 promised lots of gratuitous fan service will be pleased to know that such panels are all but absent here. Voodoo’s human form is attractive, but Basri doesn’t seem to feel the need to flaunt that. And that’s a good thing.

I can see this going lots of different ways, and some of the implications of this issue for how Voodoo will fit into the DCU at large are interesting, to say the least. I’m sold for now on a mix of strong lead characters and attractive art – I’d love to see this series become as cool as it can be.

  1. Yes exactly. You nailed it. This was the first title I actually felt the need to write a review for but you have said everything that needs to be said.

There is SO MUCH potential here for something amazing and so many options for how it can go forward, but there, in the back of my head, is the constant worry that it’s going to take a turn to the simple and ruin all this potential. Let’s hope not because there is something good here.
