WOW!!!
Would it be cheating if I said this was my pick of the week? This was so good though and amazing value. I have been a huge fan of the vertigo imprint for a long time now mainly focusing on Fables (one of the best ongoing series EVER), Jack of Fables, Y: The Last Man, Sandman and more recently Scalped.
Imagine then how happy I was to pay $4.99 (that was £3.50 for me the brit) to get 7 #1 issues from a bunch of different books. This book gave you #1 of Crossing Midnight, DMZ, Army @ love, Loveless, The Exterminators, Scalped and Jack of Fables. As I said, I had read 2 of these books which meant I was still getting great value for money, and learning that there are still a great bunch of Vertigo books I haven’t even gone near. The only trouble is I now want to go and pick up about 10 trades, oh dear.
So which one was the best? I found it weird that Jack of Fables was included and not Fables but it still reads well although I think you get a little more enjoyment from Jack if you read the main Fables book. Scalped was something I considering picking it up when it first hit the shelves but decided to leave it. After hearing rave reviews I went back for the trades and OH MY GOD it is worth it. That book is awesome.
So out of the books I hadn’t already read I really enjoyed DMZ, something I had always fancied reading and The Exterminators, something I had completely disregarded. The other titles were good but these two books were really great, brilliant writing and awesome art, they typical winning combination I have started to expect from Vertigo.
My only qualm about Vertigo is that I find their books read better in trade, one of the good things again about this book is there are plenty of trades for me to go back and collect, but this hasn’t made me want to pick up anything as a monthly title.
However they have got my interest and for $4.99 I want to thank them for a gift, if people missed out this was a gem, I hope they continue to do this maybe once a year, and other companies think about this as a form of getting new customers to the medium.
Amongst the crisis and invasion I was happy with my own little slice of heaven with Vertigo First Cut!
Art: 5 - Excellent
