Well…. this issue kind of sucked. And that’s hard for me to say, because I’m a die-hard Moon Knight fan. I love the character, and will buy every book that has him in it (except for his Deadpool tie-ins with issues #8 &9, because I just can’t deal with that anymore). Now with that said, this really wa one of the worst issues of Moon Knight I’ve read in a long time.

I’d hoped that this would be an issue explaining his involvement with the Secret Avengers, since it carried the Heroic Age banner across the top, and it was over-sized. However, it was not, and was entirely just a throwaway story about Spiderman and Sandman. Nothing in this issue mattered, except for maybe the final three or four pages. Throughout the entire story, the characterization of Moon Knight seemed really off. I thought that Huruwitz really got the character, after reading his great opening arc to the series, but after this issue, I’m doubting it.

The art in this book was okay. It wasn’t bad, but yet I didn’t think it was anything too special. There were some panels that looked really good, but for each of those, I could find another panel that looks really bad. So the art was good enough, but I hope that Ryp is just a one time artist on this title (but I have no idea if he is or not).

So with all my problems with this, there was one part that I enjoyed, which, as I said earlier, were the last few pages. This was the only time that the Moon Knight that we’ve all come to know seemed apparent, and acting as himself (well, mostly). I personally love the dark side of Moon Knight much more than his “good guy” side, and that was a little hint of what we saw in these pages. He was shown thinking and pondering about murdering, and torturing, just for petty crimes, and how he sometimes missed it. That however was the only part of the issue that I enjoyed even slightly.

So next issue will be the Secret Avengers issue, so I’m hoping that there will be some redemption in it for all the crap that this served up. Of course, I’ll be buying the next issue, and every issue after that, even though this one was even nearly worth reading.

  1. So apparently Ryp is the artist on next month’s issue as well. Damn.

  2. I have to respectfully disagree with you on Ryp. I have not read this but Ryp is one of my favorite artists. Maybe superheroes just aren’t his thing, but I challenge you to check out his art at Avatar with books like No Hero and Black Summer and see the INSANE amount of detail!

  3. Agreed that Ryp’s art is amazing. The art in this particular issue is extraordinary! Loved the use of big panels, the density of detail to everything, and just the overall refreshing tone of the book as well. More of this please!
