I just finished reading the entire backlog of
Usagi comics, but, as good as it is, I feel that pretty much anything
you can say about the book that you an say about the individual issues.
It is a pretty decent representation of the Edo period. A lot of it
comes off as someone that read a History of Japan book and watched a
samurai movie and adapted it. It’s a little too sterile and emphatic of
the rigid social structure of the time, which, again shows a good
amount of detail to the research, but makes it hard to relate to the
characters. This specific issue had another Usagi takes on a huge
amount of shitty swordsmen, kicks their ass goes to next city. Lather.
Rinse. Repeat. I like this book and am very impressed with it closing
in on it’s (cumulative) 200th issue, but it doesn’t do anything from
issue to issue to grab new readers.
