With each issue, The Unwritten manages to change the game in a way the reader may have never suspected, and issue eight brought about the most surprising twist yet. The way that Gross and Carey turn the warden, who could’ve easily been little more than a one-dimensional plot device, into such complex, loving family man in a single issue is fascinating. This is heightened even further by the way scenes from the past two issues involving the warden are woven into this interlude, adding weight to already dense happenings. Adding in the articles and interviews that are interlaced with each issue, dealing with the large-scale ramifications of Tom Taylor’s actions, it becomes all them ore clear how what originally seemed like a questionable preview in the back of a few Vertigo books has uickly become one of the best new books of 2009.
