This issue begins brilliantly by juxtaposing Moby Dick with sex--at long last, a comic book acknowledges just how much of an aphrodisiac a long, 19th-century novel about a doomed whaling expedition can be. And, after the opening page, the issue just gets better. I particularly liked how this issue mimicked the opening of Moby Dick itself, as Tommy leaves the mainland to embark on an adventure, just like Ishmael in Melville's novel.
Part 2 of the "Leviathan" arc, this issue begins in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where Melville wrote Moby Dick, and concludes within the novel Moby Dick itself, where Tommy encounters his father, who appears to be Captain Ahab, pegleg and all. We're also introduced to Queequeg, too, who looks like a tatooed Abraham Lincoln (probably because of the stovepipe hat). It seems like this issue is setting up something big--if Tommy's father is Ahab, then what is he hunting? After lots of setup, Mike Carey might be using the Moby Dick story to stage a confrontation between the Taylors and the mysterious organization that we have caught glimpses of in the last few issues.
As always, the cover by Yuko Shimizu is great, as is the interior art by Peter Gross. The full-page illustration of 19th-century Nantucket was breathtaking, and the glowing whale sculpture was a great background image in the first half of the comic.
This was an excellent issue.
