I have to be honest, I think I made Uncanny #539 my pick of the week because it was nothing like Uncanny #538.  This is like a different book altogether.  I know that people tend to harp on the excess of Wolverine, but at least this issue featured Wolverine the way he ought to be.

The last story arc which ended in 538 was apparantly the end of the run of the artist team of Dodson, Dodson and Ponser (which sounds more like a fictional TV law firm than a group of artists).  But I'm so glad that their run is over for them at the moment.  I'm tired of seeing my X-Men in Saturday morning cartoon form.  Seriously, I've seen scarier Wolverine fight scenes playing Marvel vs. Capcom.

So how thrilled was I that the team of Roberson and Charalampidis took over.  Granted it was a whole lot of Wolverine and Hope, but at least they looked like characters that could do battle without a camera rolling to catch the laughter for the DVD gag reels.  Uncanny 539 and 538 are two different X-Men worlds.  I like this world that Roberson is creating again on his watch.

The story for me gets a 4 though.  It was good, but my code name here is 'colossusfan', so I do like to see more of the X-Men than just Wolverine.  However, if it's going to be Wolverine, he better be kicking some ass - and he didn't let me down. 

And we did get to see Hope held down and get her face sliced up with a knife by a fat cyborg.  Plus 5 points for that little bit.  And the thing of it is, Gillen, who wrote the last story arc with the cartoon team probably couldn't have sold the end fight scene if he didn't have this art group working with him.  The end battle with Powerlord Kruun at the end of the last arc might've saved that arc for me had this art group been drawing it.

Either way, if they can keep this level up into the next arc and into Schism, they'll continue to get my $4 for the book - and I'll be glad to do it.  I would like to get a bit of a refund for the Breakworld refugee arc, but what're you going to do?
