Based on the way this book has been rated, it looks like I might have the minority opinion, but I think this is the strongest issues in Fraction’s run.  Hope gets to learn a little bit about her family background, and we have a classic Finding A New Mutant story.  I’m hoping the mutant and her powers are arbitrary, and that she fades into the background of the story, as I don’t find her very interesting, but I do like how Fraction uses her to make Hope more likable.

I’ve been pretty outspoken about how I feel Fraction’s character moments are more misstep than enjoyable, but I think he’s finally starting to get a better grip on these characters.  And, even though the whole Ununphasable Kitty storyline is a bit deja vu, Fraction does a good job explaining it here, and I hope it becomes relevant to his overall storyarc soon.

It’s also nice to see Fraction teamed with an artist who seems to be more interested in telling a story than having a style.

Heinberg and Coipel’s X-Men to Children’s Crusade chapter is also great.  It would have me really excited to read the next part of the story, if I hadn’t already read the next part of the story when it came out a few weeks ago.

  1. I concur. Great little character piece rounding out the most important X-Man of the moment. Plus, y’know, Coipel and Heinberg.
