This issue avoided any of the clangingly jarring
mis-character moments that I have come to associated with the Fraction
run. Angel was a little extra-surly, but he has been archangeling a lot lately... However I thought in this case it was the story that was really clunky.
Hope apparently goes to Alaska so Cypher can do an internet search. One that Cyclops implies he had already done. Then she meets her maternal grandmother, which IS a good reason to go, but decides she knows all she needs to after one conversation with zero hints as to her father. Then we have the weird new mutant (lowercase) that is feeling really sick, but instead of going to a doctor, laments her condition and tries to jump off a building. Catching a falling person was not something that Iceman and Angel felt they could handle, so they called in back-up, allowing said mutant to transform into... well something that flies.
And meanwhile Emma is on a date with Iron Man at the most expensive restaurant in the world. In Iron Man (which Fraction writes) Stark is broke. Does Captain America really give Stark license to spend U.S. tax dollars wooing over-cleavaged mutant vixens? That nitpick aside, I can only assume this will be expanded upon in an upcoming issue into something that means something. And, of course, Kitty is trapped in a phased form. If only there was some history of that which the X-science team could look to for help... I know continuity can sometimes be a burden, but it can also enrich a story. Maybe Fraction could try reading a few old X-men issues, just for kicks?
I didn't like Portacio here as much as the last couple of times he has drawn the X-men. In particular some of his layouts seemed very clunky. The back-up was great and now I am thinking about grabbing the Children's Crusade in issues.
