Fraction's X-Men is solid, if unexceptional. What he does well is juggle multiple stories simultaneously, while reminding us of the theme of the new X-Men status quo in San Francisco. Here, the plots juggled include Beast's goal of forming an X-Club designed to save the mutant race and Colossus's quest to address his melancholy past.
What Fraction has not done yet (as an X-Men writer) is come up with an earth-shattering plot. He has not devised anything that makes us gasp - no Mojoworld, X-Tinction Agenda, Asteroid M, Age of Apocalypse, or the like. The greatest reveal in this book was that Angel has the ability to transform into Archangel, a character I have loved since the early X-Factor days. This reveal is exciting, since Angel is a likeable lightweight, whereas Archangel is a deadly powerhouse.
The art, on the other hand, continues to disappoint. The Dodson art for this issue was distinctly better than last issue, but it was not good. I surmise that Greg Land will be back next issue. Land is better than the Dodsons (I can't believe I feel that way), but he is not good enough to be writing the premier X-book. C'mon Marvel - give us a better artist for Uncanny.
